EPILEPSY IN DOGS

Every pet owner wants their dog to be healthy. Afterall they are your best buddies. No one wants to see there dog suffering from epilepsy. Its the same kind as humans.

WHAT IS EPILEPSY: Epilepsy is a disorder of recurring seizures. Seizures are described as an uncoordinated firing of the neurons usually within a portion of the brain called the cerebrum. Seizures can be caused by many conditions. Read more...

TYPES OF EPILEPSY

GRAND MAL SEZIURE:generally causes an acute decrease in state of consciousness, repeated movements of the body, excessive salivation, vomiting and often a loss of bladder and bowel control. This event may last from 30 seconds to a few minutes. It is generally followed by a period of drowsiness, difficulty walking or seeing as well as changes in behavior which can last around a day.

FOCAL MOTOR SEIZURE: its not as severe as the other one. This seizure is very mild. In it there is twitching of lips and may be legs a little.

PETIT MAL SEIZURE: In this type of seizure there is a brief loss of consciousness. But its rare in animals.

MYOCLONIC SEIZURES: In this type of seziure one or two parts of the body or muscles will jerk.

CLONIC SEIZURES: In this type there will be muscle contractions. It will be almost rythmic.

TONIC SEIZURES: In it there will be increase in muscle tone.

TREATMENT OF EPILEPSY

One thing is straight that we cannot cure epilepsy. Yes we can manage it with some medicines. Some medicines which are used for managing epilepsy.

DIAZEPAM: This medicine is given as a short term medicine, specially in emergencies. Its given intravenously.

PHENOBARBITONE: This is the usual medicine which is given or prescribed by the vets world wide. Its easy to use and is not very expensive and the main thing is that is very effective. It does have side effects, such as it can damage the liver, so to start any medicine vet should be consulted.

POTASSIUM BROMIDE: In some cases dogs are ressitant to phenobarbitone, so in that case potassium bromide is prescribed.

Dogs having epilepsy should not be left alone. All one can do at the time of seizures is to remove everything around the dog that can hurt him like sharp objects. After the seizure is over try to give him comfort. Because after the seizure the dog is confused and tired.

As i said earlier we cannot cure seizures or epilepsy but we can definately manage it.

I love your fisrt picture. I had a Dobie that color and she was the best dog I have ever had. I rescued her when she was 3 and she died at almost 12, old for that breed, I guess. I'm thankful she never suffered from a seizure. She was tramatized for her first 3 years and some of that she never recovered from, but for the most part, she did ok. I sure do miss her.
