Why be quiet?
I think it would be nice to do what Scott says because it would be normalizing homosexuality. I don't have to defend or celebrate being straight because it is "normal" to be straight. As soon as gay people are accepted as people who do amazing things (or don't), just like everyone else, it will be more normalized.
There s nothing normal about homosexuality
Ah. That explains a lot.
Let's talk about "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"
I was in the Navy and know firsthand how “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” can affect a person. It is a big deal. The constant living in fear of the possible slip of the tongue that could get one a dishonorable discharge or worse does not allow you to perform at 100%. I would have loved to talk to my ship mates about the guy I was seeing in the same way they talked about their girlfriends. To be able to put a picture of him in my work area or on the walls of my bunk as they were able to. These things add up after a while and you feel dishonest, you feel ashamed even though you know you shouldn’t. Then you start to get angry and frustrated and it soon becomes impossible to be a “well balanced” person. By forcing people to hide who they are they create a situation where the soldier, sailor, etc. can not be 100%. All we ask is to be treated as equals.
