Erectile Dysfunction
What does erectile dysfunction means?
Erectile dysfunction refers to a man's consistent inability to get or maintain an erection sufficient to have satisfactory sex. It is sometimes and/or commonly called impotence but doctors prefer using erectile dysfunction instead to avoid the negative implications to men's emotional and pride. But this condition of frequent or occasional difficulty achieving or maintaining a pineal erection means lack of interest / desire in sex. It has a great effect in every man's well being, sexual, family, and life as a whole.
In normal condition, men get aroused, stimulated and get erection when something sexual happens using one or more senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste). The message is transmitted to our brain (pituitary gland) by the Central Nervous System. The message is then sent back as command of the brain through our nerve impulses that increase our blood circulation and rushes the flow of going through the penis. With the erection happens. There are four essential requirements in order to achieve normal erection:
- The Nervous System that sends and signals message to the brain and penis must functions properly.
- Healthy Circulatory Systems and intact blood vessels system for an excellent flow of blood in and out of the penis.
- Smooth muscular control, to ease and relax the penis to achieve the right amount of blood to fill the veins of the penis.
- Be able to control and trap the blood in the penis in order to sustain its firmness and enlargement.
Erectile dysfunction is common with older men but it can or may occur at any age. Its causes and treatment varies on every person but erection problems can affect really affects sexual life and relationship.
What causes erection problems?
We can categorize erection problems into four (4):
- 1. Physical related cases such as injury to nerves or loss of blood supply to the penis
- 2. Psychological such as stress, anxiety or depression).
- 3. Drugs and chemical abuse related like, overdose of medication, alcohol consumption, smoking, or illegal drug.
Health condition related complications which affects the nervous system or blood circulation that includes but not limited diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, atherosclerosis, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson's disease.
What are the symptoms?
There is only one symptom of the erectile dysfunction is the man's inability to achieve an erection and maintain to be firm hard consistently for sexual intercourse. The only symptom of an erection problem is the inability to have or maintain an erection that is firm enough to consistently have sexual intercourse. The abnormality or inability may or not be interconnected to sexual drive/interest and ability to have an orgasm and ejaculation.
Diagnosis?
Erectile problems can be diagnosed by the help of health professionals using physical, medical and sexual history examinations. The examinations include laboratory tests, and psychological tests can help determine whether the problem is physical, psychological, or a combination of the two, to further know whether the erection problem occurs all the time or occasionally.
Prevention?
It can be prevented or reduce the risk of developing an erection problem by avoiding smoking, drinking too much alcohol, and using illegal drugs. Boast your health by maintaining good eating habit / diet and exercise. Most of all to enhance good psychological and emotional condition, the keyword is good communication and relaxed approach to lovemaking with your partner.
Treatment?
The approach in the treatment for an erection problem (erectile dysfunction) still depends on the cause of the problem, which may be psychological, physical, or a combination of both. Aside from apply the basic of preventing this condition, there are many doctors take wise steps approach to treating erection problems, using the least invasive treatments first. These steps are:
- 1. Trying different kind of medication then as they go along try to discover and eliminates medications that might be causing the condition.
- 2. Trying to seek psychological counseling and a vacuum device.
- 3. Oral medication to aid the lack of testosterone (such as phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors [Viagra, Levitra or Cialis])
- 4. Trying medications that are injected or inserted into the penis.
- 5. Trying penile implant surgery or an external penile splint.
Viagra, Levitra and Cialis
How they work
Viagra, Levitra and Cialis prevent the breakdown of nitric oxide, a chemical messenger that promotes relaxation and opening of the blood vessels that supply erectile tissue in the penis. Under the influence of nitric oxide, these vessels expand and stay dilated. Increased blood flow makes erectile tissue swell and compress the veins that carry blood out of the penis, resulting in a full erection.
PDE-5 inhibitors do not automatically trigger erections. Sexual stimulation also is needed to start the whole process. The medications enable a more complete response to sexual stimulation.
Many clinical trials have shown that PDE-5 inhibitors improve erectile function regardless of the underlying cause or causes. Viagra, Levitra and Cialis increase the number and quality of erections and sexual experiences in men with erectile dysfunction due to arteriosclerosis, diabetes, spinal cord injury, depression or the aftereffects of prostate cancer surgery.
Similarities and differences
The drugs have slightly different chemical compositions that affect how quickly they work and wear off. Other distinctions - for example, which drug may be best for men of different ages or with different medical conditions - aren't known. No study has directly compared these three medications.
Several factors may affect your choice of medication, including how well your body responds to one drug over another and how long you want the effects of each dose to last. Talk to your doctor about your options and personal preferences to help decide which one of these medications might work for you.
Important Note for Taking Viagra (PDE-5 inhibitors and heart problems)
The 1999 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) Expert Consensus Document noted that PDE-5 inhibitors may be dangerous for people who: 3
- Have coronary artery disease (CAD).
- Have heart failure and low blood pressure.
- You are taking many different drugs for high blood pressure.
Viagra, Levitra, or Cialis should not be taken if you are under nitrate medications-such as nitroglycerin-for heart problems. Combining any these PDE5 inhibitors with nitrates medications can lower your blood pressure to a dangerous level. Also, certain alpha-blockers (used to lower blood pressure and to treat an enlarged prostate) should not be taken with these medications because of the risk of a dangerous drop in blood pressure. You should already check with your health professional and ask whether you can take Viagra, Levitra, or Cialis with your alpha-blocker.
Side Effects of Viagra
The most common side effects of VIAGRA are headache, facial flushing, and upset stomach. Less commonly, bluish vision, blurred vision, or sensitivity to light may briefly occur.
In rare instances, men taking PDE5 inhibitors (oral erectile dysfunction medicines, including VIAGRA) reported a sudden decrease or loss of vision. It is not possible to determine whether these events are related directly to these medicines or to other factors. If you experience sudden decrease or loss of vision, stop taking PDE5 inhibitors, including VIAGRA, and call a doctor right away.
Recommended Dosage
Recommended Dosage of Viagra
If you are older than age 65, or have serious liver or kidney problems, your doctor may start you at the lowest dose (25 mg) of VIAGRA. If you are taking protease inhibitors, such as for the treatment of HIV, your doctor may recommend a 25-mg dose and may limit you to a maximum single dose of 25 mg of VIAGRA in a 48-hour period.\
If you have prostate problems or high blood pressure for which you take medicines called alpha blockers, your doctor may start you on a lower dose of VIAGRA.
If erection problems could be caused by a prescribed medication, it may be possible to change the dose or try another medication. Do not change or stop taking any medication without first talking with your health professional. Discuss your general health status with your doctor to ensure that you are healthy enough to engage in sexual activity. If you experience chest pain, nausea, or any other discomforts during sex, seeks immediate medical help. Remember to protect yourself and your partner from sexually transmitted diseases. VIAGRA is one of many options for treating ED that you and your doctor can consider.
