How to Be Ergonomically Correct
80Introduction
Ergonomically correct is not a set state, but rather means that what you do is adapted perfectly to the environment in which you do it.
What does this mean?
Basically it's about your work conditions and how safe and healthy they really are. This means getting into comfortable positions depending on the exact work we need to do, which can include relationships between us and machines.
For the purposes of this hub I'll be talking mainly about working in an office and using computers. The good news is that if you need to find out more information there is a lot out there available for free on the Internet.
By reading up and learning what it takes to work comfortably and healthily, you'll end up working better!
Typing At the Computer
Nowadays more and more of us type words up on a computer more often than we write them on paper! With this dramatic change in the way we work comes the need to evaluate how safe and healthy this really is, and how we should use our keyboards properly to ensure we're ergonomically correct!
One of the safest ways is to learn how to type properly. Many of us type using just two fingers, but we aren't doing ourselves any favours for two reasons:
- We will end up typing slowly,
- We won't be using our hands in the heathiest way possible.
For this reason get searching about various touch typing lessons available online. The good news is that many of these are completely free to use!
The more time you spend learning how to type properly, the more comfortable you'll feel and the easier it will be to get work done!
Sitting At The Computer
When it comes to sitting at the computer this is often the area where most of us are the worst! There are so many different ways we could sit. Perhaps we have bad desk chairs, or our desks are the wrong height - or maybe we just slouch for seemingly no reason at all! Whatever the problem is, this could do damage in the long term if you don't sort it out now.
Luckily I have a few easy tips for you to follow:
- Try to make sure your back is straight and your legs are running at a parallel angle. To make this easier sit straight on the back of your chair and then place your feet flat on the floor. This will naturally help you to sit better.
- If your feet cannot touch the floor then your chair, as well as your desk, could be too high and will need adjusting.
- You should also make sure that the keyboard is at a good height so that your arms can be parallel to the floor. This helps minimise the tension in all of your joints.
These are just some simple tips that can really help you to be more ergonomically correct. You may have to play around with different desk and chair adjustments until you get it right.
Watch Your Eyes!

Ergonomics is not just about your body but also takes into account certain factors such as your eyes.
Your eyes are probably the most used part of the body when staring at a computer screen so take care of them! Here are a few quick tips:
- Focus on far away objects at intervals of around 10 minutes to help exercise your eyes.
- Make sure you aren't squinting to see better (wear glasses!),
- Blink if you need to regain focus,
- Make sure light isn't reflecting on the screen.
Conclusion
As you can see, there are a number of ways you can ensure you, and your equipment, are ergonomically correct. For more information see my other hubs or check out the vast information for free on the Internet.

Thanks for your comment. I really need to get better at sitting (which is why I wrote this hub!) It can do a lot of damage if you don't do it right.
good tips. I take frequent breaks and add a little stretching in just to keep the body in good shape when typing for long stretches.
Stretching is also really good - I try to do it too but need to do more!

I know I'm bad for not sitting properly, as for the keyboard, I use a laptop, so can rest my wrists (which helps lol)and you are correct about typing...much easier on you when you type properly ;)
