Esthetics and Estheticians

What is esthetics?

Esthetics is about improving appearance. When we're talking about esthetics and skin care, it's about improving the appearance of your skin's complexion, tone and texture.

An Esthetician can be called different things in different states. In my state of New Jersey it's called "Skin Care Specialist", while other states refer to estheticians as facialists, beauticians, aestheticians, and skin specialists. Either way, they all mean the same thing. The person is trained in a course designed to learn about all aspects of skin and skin care. In New Jersey for example, it was a 600 hour course. I then went on to take another 80 hours to learn more about medical aestheticis.

(The two spellings of Esthetician (with an Ae in the front, or with an E in the front) are both correct. Often times in Europe they use the A, and often times, a medical skin care specialist adds the "a" to differentiate.)

I've written a book for students in the esthetician field. It's a resource for those beginning, or getting ready to take their state boards and want to refresh.

It takes information and breaks it down to make it easier to understand. It's taking the "jargon" and making it understandable as well. It makes an excellent supplement to your text book.

It covers things like products, ingredients, sanitation, anatomy, and much more. You can find it at SkinCareStudent.com.

What Does an Esthetician Do?

What exactly does an esthetician do?

An esthetician generally works at a day spa, medical spa, dermatolgist office, plastic surgeon's office, or other similar places, and works with skin care.

An esthetician may do facials, full body waxing, skin analysis, make-up, or body skin care treatments like scrubs, glows, airbrush tanning, and other things.
