Eternity Ring - An Eternal Symbol of Love
77
The eternal sentiment of love has been represented in literature, music
and prose for ages. Nothing, however, displays the intense beauty that
is love as visually as the eternity ring. Although its origins go back
as early as 2000 B.C., the eternity ring's earliest recording was in
Ancient Egypt. Egyptians wore the bands on the third ring finger of the
left hand; the finger that was thought to contain the vein of love.
This is a tradition that continues in more modern times as the ring is
now closely related to marriage and worn on the same finger as the
wedding band.
The Eternity ring is a gold or platinum band similar to that of a
wedding band. It is encircled completely or partially in stones, with
diamonds being the traditional choice. In more current times, however,
colored gemstone have become an acceptable variation, either
inter-mixed with diamonds or standing on their own. Often the choice of
substituting a gem for a diamond is facilitated by a desire to
incorporate the birthstone of the recipient, the gift giver or both.
Regardless of which type of stone used, there are generally three types
of eternity rings that can be had: full, half, or the trilogy ring.
Full Eternity Ring
The full eternity ring is a band of white gold, yellow gold or platinum
that is fully encircled with diamonds or colored gems each of the same
size and cut. While the beauty of this version is undeniable, it can
come with certain drawbacks that may make it the least desirable of the
choices. Diamond count and the necessary custom fit, makes the full
ring a more expensive option. Due to the number of stones that cover
the ring, it may be less comfortable and resizing is more difficult if
necessary.
Half Eternity Ring
The half eternity ring is a less expensive yet equally beautiful
option. With this particular version, the gems are set to only encircle
the visible half of the band. Other than cost, the benefits to this
partially adorned ring is the ease of resizing if needed and the lack
of customization that is associated with its full counterpart. Less
stones mean a thinner band that is a more comfortable fit on the
fingers.
Trilogy Ring
The trilogy ring is the latest version of an eternity ring and consists
of only three stones. This romantic version has become quite popular in
that the stones represent the past, present and future. Eternity rings
are often given at a couple's first anniversary and with the birth of
their first child. The latter event is the perfect occasion for the
trilogy ring as childbirth can represent a couple's past, present and
their hope for the future.
Men's Eternity Rings
Another often forgotten eternity ring, are the ones that are made for men. Traditionally given to women by their husbands, in current more modern times, they're acceptable anniversary gifts for husbands as well. The men's band is generally made out of gold, titanium or platinum and diamonds and tend toward a more conservative look.
