Ethiopia

Being Ethiopian is a privilage!

I am an Ethiopian. Was born there. Schooled there. Got a job there and lived a decent cool life till i migrated to Australia in 2008. Being an Ethiopian has it's own effect for those who are living in the developed world as migrants. In the western medias Ethiopia is well known for its non-ending hunger, war, poverty, disease and bad governance. Reports about Ethiopia's hunger in western medias started to appear in the 1980s. The 1984 hunger reported by the BBC showed it all. Though i was a young boy by then i remember the effects of the hunger reflected in cities and towns that depend on food production in the rural areas. There was really a serious food shortage.

It is true all these are the existing facts of Ethiopia, and the current situation may not be better as so many Ethiopians are affected by hunger even today. While there i have witnessed three major wars where thousands of soldiers were killed in a very short time, countless drought and hunger, many epidemic outbreaks like TB/HIV and many civil unrest. These are the factors which increase the number of Ethiopian migrants all over the developed world.

I am no expert in assessing why the country got broke but have something to say in a lay man way. Ethiopia has so many positive sides that will definitely enable her to feed her children amply.

  • There is enough land to be cultivated
  • Enough water resources
  • Strong and hard working farmers
  • A good climate.

All these would have made the country able to sustain itself with food. As to me the odds are:-

  • Old farming ways.
  • Farming dependent on rain. No rain=no farming

Professional annalists may tell us all the odds why Ethiopia is still in hunger but i still believe the positive sides are strong and it won't be too long before we see marvelous achievements in food sustainability there. By the way do you know Ethiopia has a billionaire? Um..mm....no he just has his own money, i mean he is not one of those who became rich at the expense of making a lot of people poor. Just go to Wikipedia and read about Mohammed Al Amudi or Ethiopian billionaire.

I read a report there that this man has a plan to cultivate a huge amount of land with modern technological farming which the processes has already been started. Boy!! will this man do what he said? You ask any Ethiopian about this man and they will tell you "yes he can". This may be the biggest event in the country which will definitely change the food crisis in a very short time.

I want to show you another side of a positive side which may be seen by those who have a sixth sense. It is built all in faith in God. You may call it a wish but there is a strong belief among many dwellers that the country is changing for the good and time will come that the world will wonder how Ethiopia has become such a rich nation. A man of God saw a vision some years ago. He told all what he saw and as he describes the details you can't help starting to believe it. Ethiopia will be prosperous beyond anyone's imagination.

Well then am i proud to be an Ethiopian? Since i come to Australia i have seen few TV reports about Ethiopia. It was mostly about problems in the country. "Ethiopia's high infant mortality rate" or "Fistula sufferers in Ethiopia" ...things like that. I am in no way against the true and professional reports, i mean it is just one side of the story. There are many positive aspects of Ethiopia that can be reported about. Ethiopians are proude of their country because it is already:-

  • A country with archeological heritages
  • Great tourist sites
  • rich cultural diversities
  • A country with its own letters, numbers and calander
  • A country of great warriors who defended it from all kind of invasion and collonization

To be an Ethiopian is a privilege. It is a belief of many enthusiast and faith filled Ethiopians that the hunger, drought, poverty, disease and bad governance which put Ethiopians to shame will end sooner and a day will come that Ethiopia will be as developed as others and Ethiopians as prosperous.
