Even the Janitor Deserves a Vacation
60
Many small to medium businesses utilize a smaller cleaning staff, sometimes making due with only one janitor or even a part-time cleaner who has other duties on the staff. In many of these cases, the small business is already working with a pared-down staff (especially in today's rough economy): each person already is working to his or her fullest capacity.
However, everyone deserves some time off from work, whether it is due to an illness or taking a well-deserved vacation. So, what is a small business to do if their lone office cleaner needs time off from work?
This greatly depends on several factors. First, is the janitor going to be out for a day, a few days, a week, or longer? Second, what does the business's facilities budget look like? Third, is their any flexibility in the duties of other staff members?
TIME ISSUES
If the regular janitor is only going to be out for a day, typically the rest of the staff can pitch in to help keep the office clean. Also, unless the business is full of filthy work, messy people, and/or a lot of people in a very little space, in most cases, the business can survive without a janitor for the day – just have someone make sure the toilet paper and paper towels are stocked in the bathrooms. If, however, the regular cleaning person is going to be out for a while, a replacement (either from the current staff or from outside the company) will be needed.
MONEY FACTORS AND TIME CONSTRAINTS
With the economy the way that it is many small to medium businesses are working on a very strict budget. If the company is bordering on working in the red, hiring an additional (even temporary) janitor may be out of the question. A current member of the staff will need to temporarily assume the required cleaning duties. This can become a difficult process if the staff is already working at full capacity.
However, if the business has a little bit of padding in their budget, they can hire a temporary janitor to fill the void. Depending on the budget wiggle room and the cleaning needs of the business, the temporary cleaner can be a friend or college-aged child of a current employee. However, if cleaning beyond emptying the trash cans is needed, the company should consider hiring a professional cleaner. A cost-effective solution could be to find a house cleaning company that also has the capacity for commercial cleaning, as opposed to a company that is dedicated solely to janitorial services. These companies are typically more willing to work with a business on a temporary basis and not try to wrangle the company into a long-term contract or commitment. These cleaning companies offer you the best of both worlds – a professional cleaning at an affordable price (without a long-term contract).
