Comic Book Movies That Rule

I recently made a top ten list of what I felt were the top ten best movies of the past 20 years. It was a hard list to compile considering all the great movies out there. Now I'd like to take a look at Comic movies.

I've always loved comics from ever since I was probably about 6. I'd look at as many comics as I could get my hands on. In my reaching maturity I haven't read nearly as many but I still appreciate them. I also appreciate the films that are based on them. Now not all comic movies are great and not all of them are bad but there are a select few that can call themselves exceptional. Here are the top 10 greatest comic book movies of all time. (also please note that some movies have been left out. It is unintentional as you can't fit a hundred movies into a top ten list)

10. Iron Man (2008) - You usually can't have a summer without one blockbuster also being extremely good. Iron man is one of the better attempts of the last five to ten years. It puts in action but the action takes back seat to the story. The story is really good too. Showing the origins of Tony Stark was a smart move and made the movie all the more better. The special effects were sweet and the action great. The acting was fantastic too with Robert Downey Jr. yet again stealing the show. A supremely great summer movie that's just a good movie all around.

9. Hellboy (2004) - An underrated gem. Based on a comic that not many got to take a look at it's a really well done and a visually stunning film. Guillermo Del Toro is a genius film maker that really showed with this movie. It's tone was dark but it was also light hearted at times and the comedy was really good. The story was pretty awesome mix that with a wonderful cast and great action sequences and you've got a winner.

8. 300 (2007) - If you want nothing but tons of action and awesome-ness look no further. 300 took the fantastic visual style of Sin City and put it to use. Director Zack Snyder took an already fabulous graphic novel and made it bigger and badder. With a fantastic cast and tons of action abound. It's not one that you can miss and feel good about doing so. (Did that make sense)

7. X-Men (2000) - The X-men is one of, if not, my all time favorite comic books. Bryan Singer brought my beloved characters to the big screen with an original story and a cast of mutants that was fantastic (I however would like to know WHERE IS GAMBIT?!?!?!?! Best X-man hands down!). The action was quite good and the make up effects were really fantastic. A pretty good movie considering where the series went.

6. 30 Days Of Night (2007) - I've gotta say I'm a sucker for Vampire movies. Almost everyone I've seen I've loved (there are only VERY few exceptions and they have to be REALLY bad for me to not like them) with that said I LOVED this movie. Based off a creepy and groundbreaking graphic novel and blessed by Sam Raimi himself, it is one of the better vampire movies of the past 15 years. The vampire's are brutal and the carnage that they unleash is gorgeous for horror fans. The cast is very good with a few exceptions and the story is quite well told.

5. Watchmen (2009) - Yet another Zack Snyder directed comic film that deserves it's due. Watchmen was released in the 80s to critical acclaim every where. The movie stick fairly closely to the graphic novel and does a great job in portraying the psyches of the heroes who are down and out. Great great casting. Billy Crudup rules as Dr. Manhattan and Jackie Earle Haley is brilliant as Rorshach. It's a fantastic movie. A must own when it is released on DVD.

4. Sin City (2005) - Frank Miller's masterpiece was deserving of a movie when Robert Rodriguez snatched it up. A mix of story and extreme violence placed the graphic novel into Classic Status. The movie is no different, a classic if there ever was one. The violence is here just like the graphic novels and the story is also here. The movie delivers on the action and it also delivers on the acting. The acting is incredible with huge stand out performances from Mickey Rourke and Clive Owen. A very very stunning piece of visual excellence.

3. Spiderman (2002)- Bringing Spiderman to the big screen, Sam Raimi left his horror back ground, and made one of the best comic movies ever made. The cast is brilliant with Willem Dafoe and Tobie Macguire. The story although a storyline from the comics, is original and does a great job of showing the origins without really being an origin movie. The action is just plain SICK with wicked cool scenes in downtown manhattan and a fight between the two main characters that is excellent. A really bang up job Mr. Raimi.

2. The Dark Knight (2008) - Although it seems to be Cliche To put this movie up here. The Damn thing deserves it. Along with being the second highest grossing movie of all time (Damn You Titanic DAMN YOU!) IT is also on of the best movies of last year. The story is an original story mixing in characters from the series much like the 2005 predecessor Batman Begins. The movie is simpley Astounding. The acting is unbelievably good with Heath Ledger delivering a breathtaking performance and equally great performances from Christian Bale and Aaron Eckhart. The action takes second place to the story but when it comes boy does it come. The final 10 to 15 minutes of the film were pure bliss. An epic and award deserving comic movie if I've ever seen one.

and finally the number one Comic book movie of all time is....

1. Superman (1978) - Now you may be asking yourself Superman over The Dark Knight? And the answer is yes. Although The Dark Knight is astounding Superman excedes all expectations AND breaks it's time barrier. The script was fantastic and focused not on one of the many monsters and aliens that Kal-El faced but rather his main nemisis, Lex Luthor. The movie doesn't have tons of actiony fight sequences but it doesn't need them. Where this movie succeeds is in it's story telling abilities. With a fantastic script AND great acting AND brilliant special effects, This movie stands the test of time and goes down as number one in my book.

and as always a set of Honorable Mentions.

1. Constantine

2. Batman

3. Batman Begins

4. Superman Returns

5. Hulk

6. The Incredible Hulk

7. The Punisher (2004)

8. Superman 2

9.  V For Vendetta

10. Wanted
