Everything I need to know, I learned from watching Sesame Street

My fav--Grover :)
Near.....Far
Everything I need to know about life, I learned watching Sesame Street. I learned about sharing, friendship, manners, Spanish, sighn language and counting. It taught me numbers, about taking turns and about basic life principles such as near and far.
Yes, I credit a lot to Sesame Street. It has served me well in my lifetime.
As a child, I watched Sesame Street religiously. Every day, I saw Grover, Big Bird, Snuffleupagus and Telly Monster be silly and teach me things I wasn't even aware I was learning. I learned to count in English and Spanish simultaneously and the words and numbers I learned from Maria and Luis served me well in High School and College Spanish courses.
There are scenes and episodes from long ago aired Sesame Street's that are forever burned into my brain. I will always feel a sort of nostalgia for Sesame Street and all its eclectic characters. Of course, when I think of the characters, I think of the crazy mix from my generation, not the sell outs (just kidding!! LOL) of today like Elmo.
My favorites will forever be Grover, first and foremost, followed closely by Ernie (I think it's the hair) and little Bert...he was only in a couple, but he was unforgettable!
I've always felt as if Bob, Maria, Gordon and Luis were a part of my extended family. I think I would be pretty peeved if I heard someone bad mouth them. :) In fact, and I realize I'm really dating myself here, but my mom taped Maria and Luis' wedding when it was on the show!! We might still have it somewhere :)

Can you tell me how to get...
Sesame Street began airing on Novemeber 10, 1969 and is currently in its 39th (yes you heard me right) season. It has won numerous awards, including Daytime and Primetime emmys, ALMA awards, and BMI film and TV awards. Not to mention various nominations for show and crew alike.
The cast has changed quite a bit over the years, people and muppets alike have come and gone. But we will never forget Mr. Hooper, Sherlock Hemlock and Bif to name a few.
In my day and age, Sesame Street was about the only educational thing on for kids. Well, that was worth watching. We had 321 Contact for a while that I watched some and Square One. And another I think the name was Strawberry Square (or circle??)
My kids have also grown up watching the show. Both could pick Elmo out of a lineup before the age of one. Although there are a lot (and I do mean a lot) more educational programming options for kids now, there's still nothing like Sesame Street.
You can imagine my excitement when I found classic Sesame Street clips on youtube!! LOL
I sincerely hope Sesame Street is still around for my grandchildren to enjoy. It is and should be an institution.

Follow That Bird!
In its 39 long seasons, Sesame Street has made many films and videos, cd's and toys. Who doesn't know a kid these days who owns at least one Sesame Street toy or video??
I still love watching Follow That Bird and passes the love on to my 4yr old son. He and I both can now sing the songs by heart and I catch him singing them every so often out of the blue. We'll be working on making my 15 month old a fan soon :)
I think one of the best parts is that everything we buy from Sesame Workshop, goes to support their fund. They work to help other kids get the same benefits kids in developed countries do.
Basically, this hub was just me singing the praises of good ole Sesame Street. I love it, my kids love it, my parents loved it, and hopefully my grand kids will love it too someday! I'd love to your comments, BTW about your fave episodes...you know have at least one :) LOL

Janetta, loved this. Sesame Street taught my kids how to count, abc yadda yadda. Can't fault Big Bird and his pals :)
Though I have to say that it was damn hard getting my daughter not to count like Count Dracula: 1 ah ah ah 2 ah ah ah 3 ah ah ah and so on.
Served me right ;)
Thanks for the comments guys!
FD--my mom of all people still gigles at the count when he says 'sewen' and 'elewen' !! haha
Fun hub! I sure do miss Grover - he was my favorite!
Hi Laura--glad you liked it! Grover was my favorite too!! :D

Yes, this is a great children's program, and I used to watch it with my kids all the time. Well, until Barney and Blues Clues came along. ;) TV for kids has come a long way since Captain Kangaroo. There was something wrong with that guy. ;) lol!
