After we roamed freely for few thousand years, gradually we realised the need to cover our bodies with some clothing. The pre-historic clothing were made of wooden barks, usually a two-piece set for women to cover the essential parts. The evolution of bra or brasseries in the moder form dates back to the 1st century in India. Thoiugh they were not well documented, from the historic stone sculptures, we can deduce that an apparel that is closer to modern bra was featured in them. It usually made of a thin strip of golden ornament that covered half breast or the nipples bare minimum. In Ancient Rome and Greece, in two of the well-known earliest civilisations, until 13th or 14th century, brasseries were unheard of, men and women alike used to wear a clothing to cover their waists. Only in 15th century, a two-piece garment set became the fashion among women. Corsets were part of this era which helped women to shape-up into a hour-glass, body form.

The 'inventor of modern bra tag' is shared by at least two woman. in 1889, a French woman named Herminie Cadolle invented the cups and straps design and marketed it. But, in 1913 a New Yorker lady, Mary Phelps Jacob, invented and patented the modern type of bra design. Thus, the era of braserries begun.
