Watch out, Watch out, there’s an evil scary clown about, and it’s about to remove your head with a hacksaw (possibly). Let’s take a look at some of the best scary clown horror movies ever released (and no we’re not including IT, because let’s face it, you’ve heard of that one).

Scary Clown Horror Movies - Clownhouse

Directed by Victor Salva ‘Clownhouse’ was released in 1988 and tells the story of ‘Casey’ a boy whose life is plagued by an intense fear of clowns. Despite his fear of clowns Casey along with his two brothers decides to visit the local circus and unfortunately for them on the same night three escaped mental patients also decide to visit the same circus.

Casey visits a fortune teller at the circus and receives a less than optimistic reading being warned that his life will be cut short. Meanwhile the three escaped lunatics have murdered three clowns at the local circus, got all dressed up in the clown garb and then made their way to the boys house where the fun (or horror) begins. Clownhouse follows the slasher style formula typical of horror movies such as ‘Friday the 13th’ and ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ with the central protagonist finally being forced to overcome his fears.

"No man can hide from his fears; as they are a part of him, they will always know where he is hiding."

Scary Clown Horror Movies - Final Draft

A relatively new comer to the world of scary clown horror movies is ‘Final Draft’ (2007) a movie in which a disturbingly scary hobo clown comes to life in the nightmares of writer ‘Paul Twist’. As a child Paul and his family visited the circus and witnessed the accidental death of one of the performing clowns who accidentally set himself on fire, the audience believing it to be part of the act laughed and applauded and this became the final memory of the dead clown.

Paul later in life fantasised that had he been the dying clown he would return from the dead to kill of those who had laughed at his death, as a failing writer in need of inspiration his friend locks him in his loft with no TV and a limited supply of food, and refuses to let him out until the script for a movie is written.

The scary clown featured in Final Draft is known as ‘Punchy’ and as time goes by and Paul locked away in the attic becomes increasingly detached from reality Punchy becomes increasingly real.

The movie follows the imaginings of Paul fantasising about the horrific deaths of those who have crossed him throughout his life at the hands of Punchy the clown.

Scary Clown Horror Movies - We All Scream for Ice Cream

From the ‘Masters of Horror’ series directed by Tom Holland ‘We All Scream for Ice Cream’ tells the story of the mysterious clown called ‘Buster’. Taunted by the local bully whilst working in his job as an ice cream man Buster the clown is accidentally killed by the local children.

Buster returns after death to enact his revenge upon those who killed him and upon their children, Buster is able to Pied Piper fashion mesmerise the local children who come to him to be fed a mysterious voodoo ice cream that once eaten makes the father of the child that ate the ice cream melt away.

Needless to say that ‘We All Scream for Ice Cream’ ends with the final show down between Buster the evil clown ghost and the main protagonist. We All Scream for Ice Cream is not a ground breaking movie in any shape or form but makes for some good all round scary clown movie cheese, if that’s what you’re looking for.

Clowns are just creepy period. The Tele-series Stephen King's " It" with Tim curry was pretty creepy then towards the end they went a little over the type.

I'm not easily scared by horror movies, but the psychological ones get to me, like Saw, more than anything

Thank you for having appreciation for Clownhouse. I loved that movie since I saw it back in the day. I actually wrote a review on it and posted it here on hubpages. I am definately going to check out final draft, if it is as good as clownhouse...I will love it.

I am a sort of horror fanatic and I write reviews on sort of B to C horror films with a few mainstream ones sprinkled in. Check them out if you get a chance.

Clowns have always bothered me. And ever since I watched "It", they're just creepy. Guess I better not watch any of these other movies. Who would have thought that there were so many Scary Clown Movies. Interesting hub, thank you.

haven't seen any of these, as my husband is scared of clowns. why are so many people scared of clowns? is it because they are clearly not happy people but they are all dressed up ..in a creepy way... to make people happy? I think, that the clown in The Devil's Rejects was waaaayyy scary. It isnt really a clown movie, but he is scary anyway.

I've never understood the irrational fear of clowns--I watch politicians all day!

On a more serious note, no mention of Killer Klowns from Outerspace?

I'm going to have to check out that Final Draft. I collect hobo clowns and the more unusual they are the better. I have around 150 now but the collection grows every year. Cool article.
