Lancer Evolution IX was first introduced in in Japan on March 3, 2005 by Mitsubishi and then exhibited the same day at the Geneva Motor Show for the European market.

The model was then exhibited at the New York International Auto Show for the North American markets the following month. The engine of Evo 9-2.0 L 4G63 features MIVEC technology (variable valve timing) as well as  a modified turbocharger design which boosting official power output at the crankshaft to a new 286 hp (213 kW) and its torque to 289 ft·lbf (392 N·m).

The precious model Evolution VIII first offered dynamometer readings of approximately 245 WHP and 245 lb·ft (332 N·m) in 2003 in addition to WTQ with a flywheel power rating of 271/273 respectively. This time The Evolution IX put as much as 260-270 WHP and 260 WTQ to the wheels thus rouse the speculation that the car's actual output was more than the claimed 286hp.
