Censorship and Dangerous Dogma
I don't believe that evolutionary science is a racist doctrine. Many good people have studied evolution and done wonderful work using this doctrine to draw sensible conclusions about similarities between the human species and various other animals.
How can we use a pig's valve to heal a human heart, if we don't first consider the possibility that these species are somehow compatible?
However, there are people who have used the idea of evolution to support racism and racist practices.
At the same token, there are people who have used Christianity (Biblical teachings) and/or other religious doctrine to support racism and/or other inhumane practices, including negligence.
People who say it is the "will of 'god'" for a group of people to die or suffer.
As for me, I was raised a Christian, and learned about evolution in school. As a result, I have come to the conclusion, that you have to take the best of what you know and make the best discretionary judgements you can.
For example, I remember when I was in 7th grade and a student in my class brought a note into class saying that he was not allowed to read the book The Giver by Lois Lowry for "religious reason". I still don't understand the basis of his parents' decision, but today, I appreciate the civil way in which the matter was settled. As opposed to burning the school down or stopping all other students from appreciating the artistic work (I enjoyed the book, personally). He was excused and the matter was settled.
I hate when people ask questions like "Do you believe in the Bible, or evolution?" Because there is more to the Bible than just the book of Genesis, and there is more to evolution than the crazy people who use it to justify racism.
When asked questions like these, it feels like I'm being asked to choose between burning a stack of Bibles and burning a stack of Biology textbooks!
As you know, censorship is an age-old practice. So is bookburning. I choose to remain neutral, and participate in neither. But I strongly encourage people to learn the truth about evolution i.e. the whole story. Especially if they are studying the sciences and/or medicine, in order to understand the basis of many modern developments. Accepting Jesus as your personal savior is not mutually exclusive with stem cell research...no matter what anybody tells you!

Good point CWB. I never understood why people used the term race to seperate skin color.
Hi dutch84,
I agree with your thought that evolutionary science is not racist. Some people forget to dileneate the boundaries between biological science and the social construction of reality. The way the human species came to being is not similar to how racism as a political apparatus has been constructed as a way to justify deliberate oppression, control and inhumanity of one race over another.
You hubs are very interesting.

Racism, bigotry, tribalism, ethnicity, different religions, beliefs, no beliefs, fear and our own inadequacies as so called human beings have been the fuel for wars, cruelty and inhumaminity to our fellow man and have needed very little fuel to fire. Institutionalised racism was the cornerstone of occupying forces throughout history. the inquisition, colonisation and so-called civilising of indigenous peoples took place the world over. lets just pray that we learn from history.
Great hub thought provoking!
Good hub.
i really don't care whether it is racist or not .The only evolution theory i want to believe is the story of the creation whether you evolve from a donkey, a chimp or a monkey is your choice. But one thing i know is that i am wonderfully and fearfully made .
Very informative dutch84 Thanks
kunle - it isn't a question of belief or not but of evidence or not. every single shred of evidence we have points to evolution. it is not a "theory". it may have been called that in the days of darwin - but remember, he did not even know about genetics when he wrote "the origin of the species"! (this was discovered later by Mendel)
you ARE wonderfully made. ain't nature a great thing!

I really like your closing comment. I do hope however that we agree there is only one race of people on earth. The idea that there are multiple races within the species is scientifically incorrect.
