Can you imagine a world deprived of what is called as ‘Black Gold’ or oil for that matter? Oil and natural gas are vital to the smooth functioning of today’s technological civilization, in fact they supply the basic feedstock required to manufacture basic products like food clothing shelter etc.

Despite global recession oil continues to dominate the world economy even with falling prices and that’s why, there are various jobs vacancies in oil & gas recruitment programs. Multinational companies vie for a firm hold on lucrative oil fields and oil producing nations prosper as a result of this natural resource. The reverse can also be true. Diminishing oil resources can spell impending doom in the form of crashing markets and economies resulting in depressions in economic growth and death of nations as a whole.

 According to researchers there are over 3000 oil rigs around the world and there are innumerable opportunities for a career in this field. There is a wide range of jobs starting from geologists and scientists to engineers as well as blue collar workers who get their hands dirty with drilling jobs and working on pipelines. Oil giants employ people in different levels to get their job done. Some of the specialized positions are discussed below.

 The expertise of a specialized Geo physicist may be sought. Drillers, Seismologists, Service rig operators etc have their parts to play.

Further work on the oil rig requires the services of a Production Engineer. They have to make the decision of how to bring the oil out as economically and expediently as possible. There is an extremely demanding area where complex computer models and mathematical formulae are required to work out reservoir pressures. This is the job of an Oil Reservoir Engineer.

Then there lies the job of separating, processing and finally transporting the oil to specified locations. So you can be a part of construction recruitment drives of various companies as well. An Oil facility Engineer is responsible for this. Another specialized job category is that of an Energy Economist who deals with risk assessments and profit evaluations.

Apart from all these, oil rigs cannot function without laborers. Their jobs tend to be routine in nature and whatever training required is provided on the job.  Education specifications are few but a proper certificate of health should be produced.

Thus we’ve seen how very wide and challenging the Oil and Natural Gas industry is, offering a multitude of opportunities for the ambitious man. There is an ocean of knowledge waiting to be tapped by prospective entrees into the industry. If it is a university degree or college certification that you are aiming for, try and get into a reputed college where you can gain the required knowledge in math, science, computers etc. Weigh your career prospects, choose what field you want to enter, and then go about acquiring the appropriate knowledge and training.

Apart for degrees there are certain basic requirements for working in the oil industry i.e., minimum grade 12 education, problem solving skills, good command over the English language, Mechanical Aptitude,  Computer literacy etc.

Specific Training programs are provided by employer companies, which educate their employees about the potential dangers and safety measures. Many of them qualify for insurance schemes also. Orientation programs for specific jobs are also provided. A career in this industry certainly seems bright and impressive.
