Exercise The Spine Using Yoga Postures

Effects of Gravity

One of the negative effects of gravity is the compression of the spinal column. There are disks that separate the vertebrae of the spine and are flexible enough to move back and forth and cushion the impact when we sit, stand, walk or jump. When the back becomes out of alignment or the disks are damaged the nerves can become irritated, cutting the flow of energy and weakening the connective tissues. The main focus of a yoga posture is to tone the spine and restore the flexibility of the spine.

Many yogis measure aging by the flexibility of the spine. In our youth we tend to be more agile and supple but as we age the stress of life tightens our muscles and decreases our energy level. In addition to the effect of gravity, the spine stiffens with age through lack of activity, injuries and loss of circulation. A sedentary person, or an active person who does not move the entire spine, will slowly lose mobility.

Using Hatha Yoga for Flexibility

Hatha yoga postures focus on keeping the spine healthy. The asana twists or bending the back forward, backward and side to side can keep the disks healthy and flexible. There are many postures that work to lengthen the spine and increase the space between the vertebrae and nerves. Yogis work very hard to hold postures and sit erect which allows more blood to flow to the brain which allows an increase in energy to all the extremities.

A Hatha yoga practice constantly aims to restore and maintain symmetry and alignment. Practices are designed to work both sides of the body equally, with many postures involving oppositional dynamics. When you start repositioning the body to hold itself in better levels of alignment, you may feel awkward initially, but your muscles will lengthen and sustain this new level of balance you have created. Go slowly and be persistent.

Keeping the Balance

There is nothing wrong with lounging in a chair or relaxing your posture. The key to everything is balance. When you practice yoga be aware of the effects of the spine and keep the spine flexible, lengthened, toned and strong. Symmetry of the body is one of the important signs of good health.  If you want to learn some tips about sciatica treatment, read How to Treat Sciatica Pain.

Very nice hub. It is most important to keep our spinal column healthy.

It is the structure that supports movement. It also surrounds and protects the spinal cord - the major nerve that stretches from the brain right down till the lower back. And it is this cord which enables the complex complex communications between our brain and the rest of the body.

Thank you all for your positive thoughts. I am at that that wonderful age of 50 where things just do not work like they used to do... I do yoga at least 3 times a week and it has made a dramatic difference in my flexibility.

Interesting read, although I would like to mention that you do not do justice to the title of your article. When I read the title, I was under the impression that I would be reading about the yoga postures (asanas) themselves. I have been practicing yoga for 10÷ years now, and I have knowledge obtained from instructors in India.

rylittleton - It will help your back - I guarantee. Start slowly and you will see changes. I had some back issues and I have not had any problems in over a year. I have been doing yoga for about 5 years. Thank you.
