In this article we will take a look at several different decisions we all make when exercising in the framework of adhering to the best fat burn numbers. We will use this framework for 3 common decisions.

Which cardio machine should I use?
I will answer this question simply, and then I will add some thoughts to that answer. In terms of burning fat (measured in calories usually), the elliptical machine, which simulates running, is more effective in this effort then a treadmill, stationary bike, and a recumbent bike. So, in terms of achieving the best fat burn numbers, the elliptical is your machine! Now, remember these two things. First, its only effective if you don't quit! If you have been doing the elliptical each day for two weeks and it is becoming boring so you quit soon after beginning, it will lose effectiveness. In this case, it would be more effective to do 15 minutes on a treadmill and 15 minutes on a stationary bike then 10 minutes on an elliptical before quitting. Also, remember that sometimes the body can get use to a certain activity or routine and it begins to become less effective. Because of this, it is considered a best fat burn decision to switch up the cardio activity occasionally.

Without being able to track calories, how can I be sure to maximize my weight/strength training?
One of the factors that is rarely considered when we look at weight/strength training is heart rate. We tend to focus on factors like the number of reps to use, and the amount of time between sets, but the heart rate during these activities can have a strong impact on the best fat burn numbers. Weight/strength training activities will elevate the heart rate from accomplishing them alone. This being said, the most effective plan I have seen is to include some sort of short cardio (60 seconds on a treadmill) between sets of strength training. This will maximize the heart rate during the weight/strength training sessions and maximize the best fat burn numbers.

Is it more effective to make up my own plan, or use the plans others have designed?
There is something to be respected about designing you own plan... it takes some creativity and ownership and research (reading my articles is a good start).
