Expense Tracking
Expense tracking, record keeping whatever you call it is something that all business owners need to pay attention to in the very beginning. Unfortunately, it becomes the afterthought until the dreaded tax deadline.
If you have started out this way you could be losing a lot of money by paying the IRS for things that you should have been deducting as business expenses.
Small businesses, home-based businesses and MLM’s have tax benefits that most people don’t know about. Now is the time to stop and find out what they are before the end of the year so that you too can make the most of your business.
Deductible Items
When considering deductible items, think about your business what you use for your business everyday and how you may capitalize on it for your benefit.
1. If your business is completely owned and operated out of your home you may able to deduct portions of your homes expenses
2. If you are delivering product to people you should be keeping track of your mileage, who you delivered to and when.
3. Seminars become a travel expense but a deduction to your business. You may be able to deduct the expense of the trip, food, transportation.
4. Books are of educational value. These too may be a deduction for your business.
State and Federal Income Requirements
Once you can see all the wonderful deductions that your business can take you also need to take care of the state and federal income filing requirements.
If you are new to having your own business you will need to consult your accountant and find out what reports are going to be needed.
Many states and federal require monthly reports and when you begin to make substantial amounts of money you will need quarterly statements for paying quarterly taxes and then your yearly income and expense reports.
Mind boggling isn’t it. But it doesn’t have to be. Hiring an accountant to do this for you can become rather expensive but buying small business tax software will end the nightmare and begin to save money for you.
Small Business Accounting Software
Having the appropriate small business accounting software is critical. Most of you probably are working with quicken or are keeping a spreadsheet. But, wouldn’t it be easier to plug into software that will calculate the percentages of the deductions, suggest other deductions, allow you to customize your business and print monthly, quarterly and yearly income and expense reports when needed?

Tax season does not have to be the 'hair pulling stressful' time that so many of us put on ourselves. It has been wonderful being 'Proactive' for once instead of 'reactive.'
Always consult your accountant to become perfectly clear on how to begin your expense tracking and what is necessary for your state.

Excellent point Dotty,
Starting though is the beginning of a great habit, continuing is the make or break point of the business. Either way it must be done to be successful..
Unfortunately, this is an overlooked part of the business until it is almost to late..
Thank you for commenting Dotty

Hi there
You mention that business owners need to pay attention to expenses in the beginning - really the ongoing habit of recording expenses needs to happen if the business is going to succeed. It is vital that a business owner continues to track expenses to see where the business is growing and where it is "leaking"
