Encompassing seven islands, Dry Tortugas is the least visited national park; however, don’t count Dry Tortugas out as a vacation option for that reason! Dry Tortugas National Park is an exceptional display of beauty, known worldwide as a hot spot for travelers. These amazing island jewels are located about 70 miles west of Key West, and, of the 64,000 acres, 99% of the park is water or underwater. Incredible underwater sights, vibrant coral reefs, shoals and crystalline waters are filled with the promise of fun, learning and adventure. Planning in advance is vital when visiting Dry Tortugas.

Dry Tortugas has a rich history, beginning even with its name. As one of the first Europeans to arrive in the area, Ponce de Leon is credited for the name Dry Tortugas. The islands were originally referred to as “Las Tortugas” because of the lack of fresh water and the profusion of sea turtles which de Leon’s crew used for a meat provision.

The preeminent historical feature, Fort Jefferson is located on Garden Key which also is the largest of the islands that comprise Dry Tortugas. Garden Key is where you can learn of the rich history of Dry Tortugas which includes tales of military power, fascinating pirate lore connected to the islands and also accounts of sunken treasures. All are echoes of the distant past surrounding Dry Tortugas. Self guided and guided tours are available, and the visitor’s center will have the most complete listing for current offerings.

Dry Tortugas is the place to go for taking astonishing underwater photos. The islands are surrounded by remarkable coral scenery filled with vibrantly colored aquatic life. Snorkeling and diving are amongst the more popular adventures sought out by travelers at Dry Tortugas, but one need not be a daredevil to explore as even the shallows show the exceptional beauty of Dry Tortugas.

Outside of snorkeling and diving, there are many ways to enjoy and explore the islands. Sailing, fishing, wildlife tours, hiking and ranger led activities are other possible options for filling your days with discovery, adventure and education. Dry Tortugas is world famous for its unique and plentiful population of birds, so, quite naturally, bird watching is also amongst the top activities so stop in at the visitor’s center for the Bird Checklist before trekking around the islands. Got a desire to get away from it all? Then maybe it’s time to soak up peaceful ambiance of the islands with a primitive camping trip.

Dry Tortugas National Park is a tropical haven worth the time and effort of planning for in advance. Regardless of how you choose to experience and enjoy Dry Tortugas, the adventure of the unique escape will pay off with memories to last a lifetime.
