Extreme Sports Holidays
63
Wassup! Welcome to my hub on extreme sports and excursions. Some of these I can only dream of practising (mostly because of my upcoming knee surgery) but they're sports which interest me, particularly the artwork of the boards and the radical attitude of riders and surfers :)
So pull up a board and take it to the max! (or just read the hub if you fancy being placid =D)
BMX
Cycling holidays are popular with those who want to take in scenary and keep fit at the same time. For those who want to take their riding to the extreme over rougher terrain, BMX biking could be the sport for you.
We all remember tearing round on our bikes as kids, attempting jumps and racing our friends (usually resulting in a few nasty grazes) and BMX biking enjoyed a stint in the 80's thanks to television programmes such as Kickstart.
BMXing got it's Olympic debute in Beijing this year, which has helped to raise the profile of the discipline and put the pasttime on the map. With an abundance of skate parks and cycle parks around the country catering for the masses of teenagers who prefer to take their biking to the extreme, the opportunities to experience a sport that is enjoying a surge in popularity, thanks to celebrities like Dave Mirra and Mat Hoffman and the video games they helped to endorse during the surge in extreme sports participation during the early 2000's
Many extreme sports holiday companies will have facilities and dirt tracks to cater for a range of disciplines - so whether you're looking to race along a track or catch some air and throw out a few tricks, BMX holidays can be a great way to experience the thrill of tearing through dirt trails and over rough terrain.
Wakeboarding
When we think of water sports, the first sport that usually springs to mind is surfing. But some enthusiasts take the board to another level, allowing themselves to be towed by a boat and riding the waves.
Wakeboarding came about in the 1980's and is a popular activity for water sports enthusiasts due to the combination of the exhilaration of water skiing with the trickery of skateboarding. Indeed, many of the tricks used by professional wakeboard riders are based around skateboarding maneuvers.
Wakeboards are constructed from a foam/resin compound and coated with fiberglass and there are a wide range of sizes for a variety of different ability levels. The sport itself can be tough on the knees as it puts pressure on the joints during landing.
Base Jumping
Whilst wakeboarding can be seen as being born from water ski-ing, the sport of base jumping has derived from sky-diving. But the sport differs from sky-diving with regards to altitude, and can often be seen playing a part in action movie scenes - such as xXx and the James Bond series.
The name derives from four surfaces that enthusiasts choose to jump from:
Base Antenna Span Earth
Armed with a couple of parachutes, a spiffy jumpsuit and no shortage of testicular fortitude, base jump enthusiasts look to scale the tallest buildings, cliffs and ridges and plummet back down to Earth.
Unlike most other extreme sports, base jumping has enjoyed a relatively low-key exposure, with enthusiasts making use of helmet-cams in order to record the scenes as they freefall. Base jumping has also been used in scientific research in order to discover how fast a peregrine falcon dives in order to catch prey.
