Eye on Feng Shui
67Feng Shui and You
Did you know that Bruce Lee used a Feng Shui master? Yes, he did. In fact, Feng Shui (pronounced Fung Shway), is a respected art worldwide. In China, Feng Shui masters are brought in to survey a given site even before architects and contractors are brought into the picture.
Feng Shui is based on the forces of life and their continual change. At the heart of Feng Shui is the desire to acknowledge the power of the natural world and to live in harmony with it.
You may recognize this as the concept of Li (order and harmony of life) and Ch'i (life breath or energy, form.)
When Ch'i moves through a room or house, it creates a pleasant and welcoming atmosphere. It gives you a sense of well-being. This particular art seems simple enough at first, and can remain so with the help of simplified instruction.

The Feng Shui Kit: The Chinese Way to Health, Wealth, and Happiness at Home and at Work
I recommend this great beginner kit, containing a Feng Shui compass with ruler markings and a Pa Kua Mirror, as well as a detailed instruction and information book. Great value. I'd actually bought this for much more a few years back.
Price: $6.99
List Price: $29.95 |
For those who really want to get into it as a WAY, there is certainly more than enough information, seminars, books, workshops, pamphlets, papers, and information on the web, to keep you occupied.
There are many books and kits on the market. Where do you go first? I recommend a great beginner kit in a red and black box called FENG SHUI KIT: The Chinese Way to Health, Wealth and Happiness, At Home and At Work by Man-Ho-Kwok. This kit contains a Feng Shui compass with ruler markings and a Pa Kua Mirror, plus instruction book.
How can Feng Shui work for you?
- Do you arrange your furniture feeling that despite all your efforts it never seems just right?
- Do you have a hard time sleeping, or wake up sweaty?
- Does your life feel a little off kilter?
- Do you want simplicity and balance?
If you answered yes to any of these things, Feng Shui can guide you in the right direction.
Feng Shui question #1
Do you need or need more Feng Shui in your life?
See results without voting
Some simple Feng Shui tips:
- Add plants inside your home for vitality and good health.
- Running water in your home brings wealth and good fortune (so buy a little fountain).
- If the first thing you see when you walk in your door stresses you out, get rid of it or put it somewhere else!
More neat facts:
While ch'i breathes life into a certain area, it can also disperse and decay, allowing sha to enter. Sha is the breath that takes life away, and is negative force. Its influence can be held back by a fence, screen, or row of trees.
FENG SHUI FOR SPRINGTIME
Based on the premise that people are affected by their environment, Feng Shui unites ancient beliefs with modern space planning, interior design, ecology, psychology, and common sense. The words Feng Shui mean wind and water, two elements of incredible energy. They are a symbolic shorthand for the power of nature and the importance of living in harmony with it.
To begin the physical process of changing and improving energy in your space, take stock of what you have in your home or office.
Discard items that you no longer value, with the clear intention of releasing the old thought, beliefs and emotions attached to them. This opens the path for new energy to enter your life. It can be very liberating and powerful.
One of the easiest ways to determine which of your possessions to eliminate is to pitch EVERYTHING you have not seen or used in the last year. Eliminating needless things will clear out your subconscious and provide a clean slate for new opportunities to come into your life. You will also benefit charitable groups.
Feng Shui question #2
Do you knowingly or inadvertantly use Feng Shui
See results without votingClean everything! Really do a thorough job. Only then are you ready to make a complete assessment of your surroundings. Ask yourself :
- Does each piece of furniture or artwork is enhancing your home's enjoyment.
- Are you keeping things you've outgrown?
- Do you look at things everyday that were gifts from someone whose taste is different from yours?
- Are you tripping over boxes that you haven't had time to unpack?
Spring is here! Time to let go and renew... no more procrastination. Go for it!

I've seen your house Paper Moon. It does need assistance. It may take a while, but with some help and elbow grease, you could be stylin'!
SoulaBee that is a nice article and a sweet profile photo
SoulaBee, I read up on Feng Shui and it sounds beneficial but I looked at my home - steps right in front of the door, the first thing you see - very bad Feng Shui - so dropped the whole idea. I guess I could paint some flowers on the risers or something.
Thanks hnyaji. Glad you liked.
Dolores, hi. I know what you mean. Not only that, but with all the people in the house there are so many different ways it could go. My kitchen is in the wrong spot and of course the bathroom is right above it and my list of faults goes on and on. But I've been determined and I've actually figured it out somewhat. In the end, I know I've got it right because everything just starts to work out. I'm working on it now again which is why I wrote this. Hopefully there'll be more to come. Sort of the layman's versions of feng shui. Stuff you can do even if you don't get or want to get the whole numbers and signs stuff.
I've got a door right in front of the steps, so I can keep that closed, or I can put a plant on the landing that you can see from the door. There's a window at the top of the first landing so that helps I guess. Making sure people's stuff isn't cluttering the stairs is a big thing. I dont' know what style your house is, though you've probably said somewhere, but you could always stensil something, even some gentle ivy. Or a picture of botanicals at the top would also do the trick.
Of course in the mean time you can have a good laugh with Rochelle Frank. Her hub is under related hubs on the sidebar. I had a good laugh with that one.
If you have any questions or issues you want me to cover concerning Feng Shui, I'd welcome the ideas. Thanks for reading, DM.
My home, being a split level, has a horrid entrance, but that doesn't keep the home from being a good place to live. I have applied Feng Shui principles for several years now, and continually find that I have done it inenvertantly, when I have just 'listened' to the space, and done what I felt was appropriate. Currently I am de-cluttering my craft room, then I want to tackle the none to friendly entry way!
Fantastic Christa. It feels so good when you "listen" to you space as you put it. I'm in the process now myself. As each room comes alive, so do I. And with each room done, better ideas for the next. Thanks for sharing that. It's funny how we all use it and really don't really know we are. Once I read up a good deal on it I realized what I was doing and took some pointers. First thing's always first, declutter. It's always like a load off my chest. Now if I could get everyone else to help me out with this, that would be great! lol. I'm always so glad my house is not a big one. Can you imagine what some people have to go through?
I loose things too quickly in my home, as it is. A larger house would just be that much more space to search... I was in a house once that had a closet for cowboy boots that was the size of my master bedroom. How would you ever find anything? With a house like that, the owner probably just bought another pair! That much junk has got to be awful feng shui, even kept neatly.
You've got to be joking me. Well, yeah! they probably do just buy a new pair. Maybe thats why exorbatant people aren't really happy. Hmmmm. Welll, I figure if I want more space, I can go play outside lol.
thanks for the information o feng shui.
you're very welcome starcatchinfo. Thanks for reading. So glad you enjoyed.
I need some of this stuff. Hey I haven't tickled you for some time. Lets play.
No, Mr. Walrus, I don't believe I've been tickled you as of late, lol.
This is good stuff, I'm thinking everyone need a bit of feng shui in their lives.
