Eyelashes pulling is symptomatic of an impulse control disorder called Trichotillomania. This psychological problem is characterized by an overwhelming urge to pull hair from different parts of the body.

Depending on the cases, people who have trichotillomania can feel the urge to pull hair from their eyelashes, their eyebrows, their scalp, their nose or even from the pubic area.

Not only that, but an other chracteristic of compulsive hair pullers is that they feel a good deal of pleasure and a sense of relief when they pull out their hair.

Moreover, some of them also enjoy to play with the pulled out hair by rubbing it against their mouth or eating it. Although in some cases the pulling of eyelashes can be unconscious.

How to stop eyelashes pulling :

Eyelashes pulling (or trichotillomania in general) can be treated with Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). This therapy's aim is to alter the eyelashes pulling behavior by identifying the precise factors that triggered it in the beginning and then show the patient the skills that he needs to interrupt and redirect his response to these factors.

CBT therapists show their patients how to gain awareness of the situations, the activities or the times of the day when they feel the urge to pull the hair from their eyelashes or from any other part of their bodies. When eyelash pullers gain this awareness, it becomes easier for them to get treated.

I have pulled my eyelashes and eyebrows out for over 15-20 years. To let you know one reason it is so hard to leave them alone, is because they ITCH when they grow back in. The ITCHING is one reason, and also they grow back in too straight or stiff and feel strange at times. So to kick the habit, I place a wet Warm wash cloth on them if they itch alot and rub them clean. This usually stops the itching to where I can leave them alone. When they grow completely back in, then the itching eventually stops. I am not one to take drugs to help this problem. I believe there are other ways of fixing this. I am a nervous person anyways, and am either biting my nails, or chewing my lip, etc. So that was how I started pulling, because it was just another nervous habit for me. I am proud to say I feel stronger and have kicked the habit. Especially when I had previously looked in the mirror and saw how ridiculous I looked without any eyebrow or lashes. And I got tired of covering them up with make-up. So try the wet wash cloth and LEAVE them alone and watch how much better you look in the mirror. Remeber the itching will COMPLETELY stop after you let them completely grow back in.
