Windows includes a utility, called Convert.exe that allows you to convert a disk file system from FAT (File Allocation Table) to NTFS (New Technology File System). You can use this tool through command prompt using command-‘convert drive_letter: /fs: ntfs’. But at times, this conversion might fail displaying an error message that it cannot convert to NTFS due to insufficient memory. Such situations might require you to reformat the hard disk and restore lost data from backup. In any case if backup cannot restore the required information, you should use Data Recovery softwares that serve as non-destructive tools to recover lost data.

You might receive the following error while trying to convert a FAT disk to NTFS disk using convert command:

Insufficient memory, could not check partition for errors, did not convert to NTFS”

The file system is reported as FAT file system and when Windows checks the disk for errors, you encounter another error message:

The type of file system is FAT. Volume serial number is <serial_number>. Insufficient Memory.”

Cause

You are using a hard drive which has a capacity of more than 2 GB and is attached to a BusLogic SCSI card.

Solution

To solve the existing issue, you need to download the BUSLOGIC.SYS driver for Windows from the BusLogic BBS and install it by following these steps:

  • You need to copy the downloaded driver to C:\WINNT35\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS sub-directory and then reboot he system

  • Next, you require to run chkdsk with /f and /r options

  • If the problem continues, you should reformat the hard disk and reinstall the operating system. Restore lost data from backup. Note: Chkdsk usually fails to fix corruption because it cannot fix the damage caused at sector level by older driver.

  • Reuse the convert command to convert from FAT to NTFS

To restore all the required data from backup, it should be completely updated and valid. If due to any cause, backup fails or is currently absent, you should use Data Recovery Software. Embedded with advanced recovery options and techniques, such Data Recovery tools employ powerful scanning algorithms to recover lost data.
