FDA Food Recalls

Did You Know?
Did you know that the FDA recalled tomatoes today? When you go grocery shopping are you informed about what is safe to eat and what isn't? I think most people would be floored if they knew the things in their grocery was not always safe. Thing that you are buying because you want to be healthy can be anything BUT that! Due to the recent dog food crisis where ALL kinds of dog food was recalled expensive brands like IAMS and Nutro, medium brands like purina and Diamond and store brands like Old Roy ,ect.... I decided since my dogs are my babies that I wanted to know first which foods were recalled so I went to the FDA website and looked around. HOLY COW!!! There were all kinds of people food recalled all the time! It was scary ! Honestly it scared me to death and so I told my best friend Peggy (who also lives in the sticks:) We both vowed to make our homes as self sufficient as possible and keep a very close eye on the FDA recalls! You can subscribe to the recalls list and every time they have ANY recall on any food you get an email. I Implore you to go there and subscribe!(link will be at the end of this artical!)

WOW ! HOLY COW!!
I have been amazed at the number of recalls that has been in my email! The number is quite large and the frequency is staggerring. I have monitored it and on an average I get three to four recalls every week on everything from freash vegtables to baby food to dog food.Unless the tainted product causes many deaths and severe sicknesses it is not reported in the news due to many things probably . It's not sensational enough without deaths and severe sicknesses, the food companies probably pay the networks off to not report them, and since the spinach recall and the dog food recall it is old news! None of these reasonas would surprise me as money talks and it is politics as usual with the news media. None of the companies want their stock to fall and their profits to wane and it's worth whatever they have to pay to make their companies products look good and nutritious and have the trust of the consumer. Believe me when I say you better be careful and be on the defense about this.Knowledge is the forerunner of success! In this instance ignorance is not bliss but deadly!
being self sufficient
For many self sufficiency isn't possible due to life style .Many live in cities in apartments or condos where there is no room to grow vegtables or raise cows ,chickens and pigs. This is where being in the know is totally important!Be very careful at roadside markets and vegtable stands as these are NOT governed closely and sometimes buy produce from some not so reputable people to get a good price.Folks in the suburbs have a choice a real land garden or even a container garden can produce some freash vegtables that you know what pesticides have been used on them and where they come from! There are many places you can buy a small hot house if you live in colder climates. View it as a hobby. You would spend lots of money on a hobby that is way less fufilling than knowing your family is eating safe.It is also very gratifying to watch the seeds you planted actually grow into vegtables that are wholesome and nutritious for your family! It can be comforting to know what your family is eating is safe! There are many companies that sell seeds and started plants that also have great money back guarantees if the plants don't florish. These companbies also have charts to show the climate and what time of year you plant each thing. Try it you will LOVE it!

Yes it is amazing what people actually do not know huh?
Interesting although this doesn't affect me here in UK.
hopefully they are on top of the situation better there!!
Fresh wholesome vegetables grown at your own home are a great alternative to the less tasty and potentially less safe alternatives at the grocery store. If you don't have room at your home, or if you live in an apartment, some neighborhoods even have a community "P-patch" in which you can grow flowers, fruits and vegetables with others in the area. Good information and thanks for bringing this to our attention.
i wasn't aware that there was that much stuff being recalled in that short of a period, I'll definitely sign up for those recall emais. Just another important thing that we don't find out without trying..
How do you get e-mail updates of the latest recalls?
A while back they recalled lettuce, then there was beef, now it's tomatoes...
They might as well recall all of McDonald's.
Makin it hard to get 2 all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles and onions on a sesame seed bun the way they're moving!
LOL...
great article!
Dutch , sorry I should have given the website in a link . just google food and drug administration. It's on their main webpage on the right in one of the boxes. I can't believe all the stuff that is being recalled I got three recall announcements yesterday. granted they were not for people food but they were recalling sheep and goat feed that had too much LEAD in it .I am sorry but that is scary to me! TOO much LEAD?Where did it get lead from for christs sake? Just scary!I am setting up to go natural and organic!!:)
And there was quite a large one this spring on cantalopes from, I think, Honduras. And even Malt O Meal was recalled earlier in 2008...good ol American malt o meal...had salmonella! I wrote two hubs on these if anyone wants to check out Desert Blondie's hubs.
I know!!! It totally scared me about the tomatoe thing though because there are alot of roadside stands and you have no idea where they get their produce from. There is NO rules governing this either! Very scary!!

I have been following food recalls for sometime now, people do need to be informed about what is on the market.
