The test of time is one of the best measures of the value of anything. The books of Dr. Seuss may be popular forever, or for as long as young humans inhabit the earth.

There may have been some things in life at which Dr. Seuss did not excel. Nevertheless, he ended up at Oxford, where the drawings he made during class caught the attention of a fellow American student, Helen Palmer, who suggested Seuss become an artist instead of a professor. Geisel took her advice, and married her as well. Her influence plus that of his mother who sang bakery pie chants to him as a young boy shaped much of what ended up in the 44 Dr. Seuss books.

Horton the elephant is the main star of two Dr. Seuss books. The characters in those books with Horton are as follows.

  • Mayzie: A lazy bird who was sitting on an egg, but probably got lazy after a few days. She convinces Horton to sit on the egg, but when it started hatching, she demanded it back until it hatched into an elephant bird. In the Broadway musical production Seussical, her full name is given as Mayzie La-Bird.
  • Hunters: 3 game hunters who planned to shoot Horton, but decided to sell him to the circus due to his ability to climb trees. In the Seuss book, they are illustrated as gentle folk, but in the cartoon, they look more like Yosemite Sam or Elmer Fudd.
  • Morton the Elephant Bird: Half elephant, half bird. The most likely reason for his being half elephant/half bird is because of Horton's hatching the egg.
