There are some things every facebook user needs to know to avoid the online disaster. Here are some possible scenarios that can put your job at risk. This is something to watch for on Facebook. This situation applies to other networking sites such as MySpace and Orkut.

Almost everyone has their own profile page for all to see and admire. Facebook has become number one social networking site in a very short span. Facebook user base from around the world is officially more than 200 million now. Many popular social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace, and others are filled with photos and videos of wild escapades and vacation pictures.

Sharing a Friend Connection with your co-workers or boss could cost you your job. How ?

Did you know that recently the British spy chief - John Sawers got a huge embarrassment, when his wife posted the family pictures and personal details on the Facebook.

Here are some real life examples of how you could put your job at risk with Facebook activity.

Sarah  posted on her facebook wall "My Boss Sucks!" and many commented on her wall.. soon throught the grapewine, her boss came to know about it. Needless to say she brought her job in trouble by venting in public.

Kevin Colvin lost his job as an intern at the Bank in Boston after he emailed his manager saying he needed time off to go to New York because of a "family emergency". But his boss discovered photos on Facebook that showed Mr Colvin at a Halloween party drunk and dressed as a fairy. In an email reply his boss attached the photo and wrote: "Thanks for letting us know - hope everything is OK in New York. (cool wand)".

Anna was looking at a call centre company job for four months. Finally, they had permanent positions available. She obviously applied and got called for interview. After the interview, She received feedback saying that they'd seen her facebook that she will be applying for university and also planning a travel for 4 weeks in April, so they couldn't hire her. Obviously Anna’s profile was a open book for everyone.

Mark spent almost an hour playing a bowling game on a Web site when he was supposed to be working on a report for the boss. He didn't get caught-but the game posted his high score to his Facebook profile without his knowledge. The boss saw that score on his Wall, which earned Mark a lecture about wasting company resources.

Outrageous behavior runs rampant all over the place. In order to stand out from the rest, some social networkers figure that the more interesting they make their profile pages, then the more viewers will browse. However, outrageous is not always a positive thing when prospective employers are scoping about.

Employers frown on this sort of thing because it casts an unprofessional light on their companies. No employer wants to hire anyone that would cause a negative effect on their professional business image.

What can you do ?

1. Using search engines like Google, check yourself on the internet. Make sure your online networking activity looks normal from an employer’s perspective.

2. Share online only what is necessary.

3. Use the features on social site to control your privacy settings. You could control how much of information is shared with your boss or co-workers or your prospective employer.

4. You could also try to keep the groups separate, for example use LinkedIn for your work related social connections.

2. You don't like your picture posted by your friend. Someone tagged Mary in a photo on Facebook, and she hates the photo, taken at a party--her eyes are closed, and she's clearly not happy.

What can you do: While you can't delete someone else's photograph (try asking nicely), it's easy to remove a tag of yourself from any picture, which will remove it from Facebook's ‘View Photos of Me' pages. To do so, just find the offending picture and click remove tag next to your name in the caption. Once the tag is removed, you won't be able to be retagged on that particular photo.
