Baseball is known as "the great American pastime", but unless you are the one playing, rarely do we think about the injuries that can occur with the players.  Pitchers in particular are accustomed to getting injured playing baseball.  Without knowing the proper pitching mechanics, it is very easy to injure your arm, shoulder and back.  Also, if you learn improper pitching mechanics, it is very hard to let go of those rules and learn new techniques.  They get ingrained in your mind, and it's hard to learn a new way of doing something.

Studies show that most kids learn the way they're going to pitch between ages 9-13, which is early.  So if you want your child to learn the correct mechanics of pitching, the correct coaching needs to begin early.  If you're learning how to do things the wrong way, you could ruin any chance you had of playing pro baseball or playing baseball with the most potential you have.  Learning the correct mechanics not only makes a difference in how you play, but it makes a difference in how far you can go with the game.

Pitching is most likely the hardest position in baseball to get good coaching in.  Most baseball coaches will tell you that they know a lot about how to hit the ball, but next to nothing when it comes to pitching.  One of the first things you need to know in order to improve your pitching mechanics is how to use the lower body to deliver the arm like a slingshot.  Also, to bring the ball down the strike zone, the pitcher needs to be in the correct throwing position all the time.  When practicing, he needs to make sure he is using the same throwing position or it won't become ingrained in his mind.

A lot of baseball players try to change the position of their arm if their pitches aren't going well without remembering that the arm is controlled by what your body is doing so the position of the pitcher's body when he is done throwing is what is important to study.  When a pitcher is having problems, many coaches will encourage the pitcher to do drills.  "Just keep throwing it and you'll learn" is the mindset they have. Nothing could be further from the truth.  If a pitcher does too many drills, they begin to over-think their pitching mechanics therefore making their problems worse.

Clearly, when wanting to learn the correct pitching mechanics, make sure you are correctly informed and follow the correct instructions from early on.
