Facts About Diabetes

Interestingly, about 9 out of 10 people who have diabetes have type 2 diabetes.

Although diabetes can be a very problematic disease if left unregulated. Type 2 can be controlled be controlled and its impact on the body can be reduced significantly if it is discovered and treated early on. At this stage, prediabetes stage, measures made to address the issue can be very helpful in preventing the full blown onset of type 2 diabetes.

What Role Do Genes Play?

For most people, the expression of diabetes is beyond their control as it often runs in families.

If one parent has it the odds are that the child will likely have roughly a 35 to 40% probability of getting it and if both parents have it, this percentage increases to 65 to 70%.

However, just because it is in your genes does not mean that you will see full expression of it. Many people have been able to make changes in their diet and lifestyle which have helped slow down or even prevent the full onset of their diabetes.

What Can You Do About It

In type 2 diabetes, insulin is produced, but the cells either become insulin resistant or the person loses these beta cells causing the person to be unable to make enough insulin.  To address this issue, drugs can be used which either produce more insulin or help make your beta cells more responsive to it.  Either way the goal is still the same: reduce the blood glucose level.  Aside from drug treatments, other methods include changes in diet and lifestyle.  The goal here is to reduce excess body weight and eat foods that will better regulate your blood glucose level.
