How to Spot a Fake Rolex

By James Montgomery

Common wisdom - if you can call it «wisdom»-- has it that a Rolex watch is fake if it is sold from the back of a lorry and it has "Rollex" embossed on it.

Another give-away might be a "Made in China" sign. Or, if you purchase a "Submariner" and it starts leaking buckets after you take it for a swim, you've been had, mate.

Yes, it is getting easier and much cheaper to own a "genuine replica." (How that for an oxymoron?)

All joking aside, there is a whole industry out there spewing out knockoff Rolexes and, some of the time at least, they are visually nearly identical to the real thing.

How do you make sure you don't fall prey to scammers? The most obvious answer is that you should purchase your watch only from a reputable Rolex dealer, not from the back of the truck or from blokes wearing long overcoats.

A good way for a layperson to ascertain the timepiece's authenticity is to take it to a certified appraiser. If you are more of a do-it-yourselfer, however, buy a magnifying glass and learn certain tricks of the trade that will shed light - literally and figuratively - on your Rolex.

Counterfeit Rolex watches: some giveaways

One of the easiest ways to spot a counterfeit Rolex is by its clear display, or caseback, allowing you to see the inner workings of the watch. The real McCoy does not have such a feature, with the exception of some vintage 1930s exhibition models that were never mass-produced.

Just as Rolex never manufactured clear casebacks, it did not engrave them either. Genuine models will have a smooth caseback, whilst fakes might feature engraved logos and other designs. The rare exceptions are the pre-1990s ladies' models, which had "Original Rolex Design" or a similar variation thereof, engraved on the caseback. Another exception is the Sea-Dweller display that has "Rolex Oyster Original Gas Escape Valve" engraved around the outside of the caseback.

A real Rolex has a 3D hologram encoded sticker on the caseback. For models produced after 2002, a Rolex crown can be viewed on the sticker, and it changes patterns when you see it from different angles. A replica usually has a repetitious Rolex pattern printed on it, but does not change when viewed from other angles.

Keep in mind too that Rolex has introduced a tiny crown logo etched onto the crystal at the area around the six o'clock direction after 2002, so it should not be present in earlier models. But remember that this feature may not be applicable to all Rolex watches.

Another tidbit to retain is that the crystal in authentic current date display models (with the exception of the Sea-Dweller) will have a Cyclops lens attached to the crystal, magnifying the tiny aperture 2.5 times. Fake Rolex watches, however, will offer only 1.5 magnification, though some "better" replicas now feature a larger font date to give an illusion of a bigger magnification. Just how sneaky can these scammers get?

Then there is the triplock crown seal. What, you never heard of such an animal? It can be identified by three very small dots positioned under the Rolex "crown" logo engraved on the end on the winding crown.

Genuine Rolex models featuring the triplock crown (Submariner, Sea-Dweller and Daytona) use an extra seal within the threads of the winding crown's tube. Most counterfeit models will not feature this seal, but will have basic screw-down threads.

One of the most accurate ways to identify a counterfeit is by locating the Serial and Case Reference numbers engraved on the side of the case, located between the lugs. Engraving on a genuine Rolex features light-reflecting, very fine lines. A copy has a more "etched" appearance and the spacing in the numbers may be too close. Not only that, but fakers will sometimes use the same numbers on all their watches.

This is, by no means, an exhaustive list, though trying to spot a fake Rolex might be quite an exhausting undertaking. Let's put it this way: given a choice between a counterfeit Rolex and a Donald Duck watch, I shall opt for the latter. At least if it quacks, I know it's an original!

Well done. I've turned down more than one opportunity to buy a fake Rolex. And I intentionally bought a fake one once on an overseas trip. However, I decided that real or fake, Rolex's are a waste of money. For the price of a fake you can get a good bottle of whiskey, and for the price of a real one, a one-week vacation somewhere you've never been before. Better yet, put the money in a Vanguard Index fund for your old age.

Right! Yes, well you can certainly buy more than one bottle of fine whisky, or have a brilliant holiday abroad, with the money you spend on a Rolex. To each their own. Cheers.

What about this Russian sailor I met at the local port...

If you have the money a Rolex would be great. If you are not in the very top income bracket, it may not be so wise. I do like looking at them and am glad of the Hubs about them.

My friend buys fake Rolexes. Not the really cheap ones but the mid-priced ones about $100 ro $200. They looks pretty real and he says his coworkers respect him a lot ever since he's been wearing it. It's kind of made me jealous because he seems to be getting lots of attention from the ladies.

Rolexes are just too expensive. A Submariner is $7,000 and a Daytona is $15,000. No wonder so many buy replicas.

My ignoramous father-in-law keeps flashing his 'Rolex' that he bought from a merchant in Korea during his tour in the Air Force. He tells everyone that he paid $1000 american dollars for it, but I know he's full of it. I can't tell, though, if he really believes it's real or not. He seems to. I plan to pop the back cover off for him and show him where it says "parts siwss / movement china and the little battery in there, too. hehe. What a moron.

Your forgetting the whole reason for such a watch isnt to look cool it is to buy something timeless and ageless. The real deal will last through many generation of your family and will increase in value over time not decrease. So yes you pay 7000 to 15000 but it comes with the knowledge of it being real. If you understand what the watch actually stands for ,wearing a fake will seem pretty pointless. If you buy a watch like a rolex it is not just for shit and giggles it is an investment that someday you can proudly leave to your son or daughter.

joeFornaki  says:

What this all boils down to, is a case of severe insecurity at it's best!

The person who wears a REAL ROLEX has a certain style that is strongly sort after by the fake wearing Rolex people. If you can't tell from the out-set that he or she is wearing a FAKE, rest assured you will know it's fake after about 10 words of dialogue. That you can't hide and the fake is soon out of the bag. Good luck fakers!

gil  says:

I agreed with JoeFornaki's comment, if you wear a fake watch chances are there is something in your behavior that will give it away, eventhought that may not be the case all the time, A clear example of it: im a waiter on a restaurant taking care of this young couple, i notice the guy wears a Rolex that cought my attention, i take care of them they leave and when i look thru the window i noticed they are driving a five thousand dollars car, chances are the watch was a fake. I certainly wouldn't spend more money on my watch than on my car. Age is another factor, if you are 12 and wearing a Rolex, chances are is fake, unless your parents are rich and you are hanging with them at the local golf club, not in the corner next to the 7-11 store on a regular people's neighborhood. The fact is, if you feel good wearing a replica, DO IT, just do it right. After all a seven thousand dollars watch does the same thing as the fifty dollars watch you can get at your local dpt store, it gives you the time. The only difference is the expensive one denotes your hi-end social status and if you are pretending but don't do it right everybody will know you are wearing a fake.

Grinder  says:

I have only one disagreement with Gil. I really don't see how having a "cheap" car proves that the Rolex the waiter is wearing is a fake. I'm with joeFornaki. My car is a beat up Renault that cost a lot less than 5000 and is a constant drain on resources what with annual tax, maintenance, fuel and insurance costs. However it is cheaper than a Mercedes. My Rolexes together could buy be a nice mercedes but I refuse to pay the Irish Government the 3000 a year it costs to keep it on the road. Instead I pay the 300 for the Renault and use the savings to buy more Rolexes - there's no annual "watch" tax or fuel costs. The insurance is reasonable and the maintenance is once every 5 years instead of twice a year.

And I know plenty of waiters, bar staff etc who wear Rolex which if not real are incredibly good fakes and more power to them. The Celtic Tiger has given us a chance to own, at least for a little while, the objects we like.

I disagree with why people wear fakes. Myself and another watch enthusiast offten wear fakes, even though we also have the real deal. Some of the fakes are swiss movement, saphire crystal and wonderful works of art. Mind you these are not your $50 copies though. They are however, what a Rolex would cost without the race cars and racing boats.

It seems to me that you sound either like a liar or a spoiled rich kid. If you are a liar it will explain your bad grammer. ON the other hand if you are rich, your parents should spend more money on your schooling as opposed to buying you exspensive gifts. Rolex watches can be enjoyed by all. rich and not rich, because poor people should have other more important things to purchase. other then Rolex watches.

Bought a "real" Rolex from a jeweler I have known for years who has his business near my own. Sent it to a certified Rolex dealer and he said the watch was not real. Paintakingly went from detailed photo to photo to check it out and found no real differences. It runs well, looks great, and wears comfortably. At the most I am out $200.00. Is that poor judgement on my part??

J  says:

Dear Lanny, you should have checked!! Anyway, genuine rolex watches are built with something called a 'hack mechanism", which means the hands stop running when you adjust the time. It isn't very difficult to tell the difference from a genuine and a fake, especially the chronometer watches. Fake chronometers do not perform the stop-watch function. The price is also a giveaway. If rolex watches were such status symbols, they wouldn't cost just $200! Sound like you got yourself a raw deal. Anyway, if your jeweler is authorized to sell or re-sell rolex watches, he can have his licence revoked for selling you a fake. My advice? Sue him for more than he's worth and buy yourself a real rolex. Hope this helps!

A TRUE ROLEX STORY "My Friend and His Rolex"

When I was in college I became acquainted with a Saudi Arabian student, Khalid Enani who was the son of the finance minister of Saudi Arabia. He was attending the Cascadilla School in Ithaca, New York for a year to learn English before going to university in the U.S.

Anyway, Khalid had a special solid gold Rolex with a camels and a palm tree on the face. On the back was an inscription to him from the king of Saudi Arabia. He said the King gave them as gifts to the children of all his government ministers. (Khalid also had a brand new red Ford convertible and cut quite a swath through the young women in Ithaca.) Toward the end of the year, Khalid ran short of money and borrowed a couple of hundred dollars from my roommate, Bob Gardner; and he left the watch with Bob for security. The following fall Bob got a call from the Headmaster of the Cascadilla school who had been contacted by the Saudi consul in New York City inquiring about the Rolex. The consul paid the $200 owed to Bob, and Bob sent the watch to the Saudi Consulate. I've always wondered if the watch ever got back to my friend from Saudi Arabia. I suppose it did. I imagine it would be worth a lot today.

As I recall, Khalid ended up going to college at Ohio State where I lost track of him. He was an interesting character. I've often wondered what happened to him. No luck with Google searches, however. He was a great admirer of Nasser and not at all fond of the Saudi monarchy. He taught me a bit of Arabic, e.g. Ana adros wa ascon fe Cornell. Can anyone translate it?

revdocjim  says:

I bought a fake because it was fun negotiating the price with the street vendor in Thailand. I think the whole idea of wearing your wealth is pretty sad and indicates serious insecurity. I wear mine as a joke, but it is still a pretty fine looking watch. It passes all the tests mentioned above and is hard to distinguish from an original. If I could afford to buy a real one I can think of far more meaningful and helpful things to do with the money. I've had two or three people take notice of my fake rolex and act impressed. Sadly and predictably they are not the kind of people with whom I have much in common. Contrary to what any advertisements say, Rolexes aren't about timeless quality and the heights of human endeavor and achievement. They are about conspicuous consumption and vulgar, lavish extravagence that chooses to ignore the realities of human suffering around the world caused by poverty. If you are considering buying a real Rolex stop and think. Better yet, give your money away to people who need it.

Here is the definative truth. Anyone who buys a fake obviously has bought into the Rolex brand and all it stands for, they just cant afford it, be that though lack of disposable income or not being able to justify the outlay it comes down to the same answer. I should know I bought a fake one when I was 17 for about £20 Sterling, I simply could not afford one but loved the brand, even at that age.

A few years later I was working and although not a well paid job I saved up and bought my first Rolex (my local Rolex dealer was doing 0% finance too!!) That really helped.

I had that for 5 years then part exchanged it for a GMT Master II (shop around and you can find official dealers who will part exchange). I got the same money back for it that I paid 5 years earlier. 5 years later did the same thing and part exchanged it again for the one I still own which is a Stainless Steel datejust with a pearl face, 10 diamonds...... (ooh get him!) My point is I am not a mega rich geek but I love Rolex and have always wanted to own one. I dont spend silly money on any other jewelery, Porsches' or drugs, mortgages etc.

I have a modest house and have never owned a car that I paid more than my Rolex for, but I am very lucky I have a company car (that is a big chunk of money I dont have to spend). Like everything it is personal choice what you do with your own disposable income, I would like to spend £65,000 on a car but guess what....I cant afford to.

This is the first ever input I have given to ANY blog/website/hub or whatever. I cant believe I got dragged into it. I was only surfing for Rolex info.....

My brother was killed a few months ago and in his belongings was a Rolex Oyster pepetual DATEJUST with a 18k platium band on it and I don't know if its worth anything or not. He brought this Rolex back from Iraq. I can't say where he got it at there because he never told me. I never got a chance to ask. It looks beautiful . It has 5 dots on the stim head instead of 3 ? It has the darkest of blue on its face with partial see through movement on the left side where the 8,9,10, is and the back you can see the movement as well . Oh well.

I think the thing everyone misses here is that a ROLEX will not make you look rich nor make you look poor,it is just a watch. I own 2 a masterpiece tri-gold and a presidents my Father left me when he passed. I bought the masterpiece while in Zurich on business in 2005 and loved the fact it was different. I do not care who wears what as a watch, to each his own. I love my watches and own them "not" for those that look at them as real or fake, I know they are real and wear them where ever I go because I know what I own are real and I wanted them when I made the money to purchase one. Wearing a watch like this is what I wanted since before I could ever dream of owning one. My Father always said when he bought his it will not make you anything but who you are...Rich or Poor it is your own personal style and what you are comfortable wearing nothing more.

i bought a fake to get laid, does the trick. Plus i know that a girl that gets with me because of a rolex (fake or real) are top stupid and money hungry to be wife material. For the money of a "real" rolex id rather go on a holiday or spend it on an asset to make more money. Rolex are a favorite of people from new money that are still a lot insecure and have to flaunt their wealth, people from old money never go "look at me everyone im wearing a rolex" thats why all the russians have to wear gold rolex's, new money but they are still neanderthal peasants, just with money.

Watches come and go. You get tired of them, so why invest ? Then you have to find a buyer for it and go thru the process of qualifying a buyer.I can understand how the wealthier and status conscious tell you to get a real one and not be a fake. But the downside, to afford such a genuine Rolex you'd probably have to be Madoff or Stanford and defraud 90 year olds out of their nest eggs/retirement savings ? And I'd really hate to get the crap beaten out of me by a mugger and really lose a $ 5,000+ watch. Maybe after a few years, if the one time you get mugged, you could just hand the thief a watch that has been amortized over 5-10 yeasr and cost about what a Fossil or Casio runs you over the same time period isn't such a bad thing. It also was accurate as any Rolex or genuine name brand watch ?

Prefer a Mickey Mouse/Donald Duck watch ? Figures ? Do you have a pair of authentic mouse ears too ?

Larry  says:

Yesterday had to open the hood of the car and check a few things at the fuel station. Forgot to take a $ 55 Casio Twin Resist off. Sure enough snagged the crystal (or plastic) on a sharp edge and put a nice scratch and scuff across the face of the crystal. Glad it wasn't even a clone Rolex in retorspect,

One word of thought though for those that think the status of the watch matters. If you're not an afficionado, any watch is simply nice upon first notice and evaluation. But as another indicated, out of sight, out of mind. It's forgotten like the Bentley Continental GT my next door neighbor drives. Even funnier, you should see him out there inspecting it for door dings ? That has to keep him awake, eating at him and driving him crazy ? That a soccer mom in a mini-van full of rug rats could pull up next to him in any parking lot while he's doing his business and ruin a $ 200,000 automobile ? Or even an under/uninsured motorist in a 10-15 year old rusted, oil burning and paint faded Corolla ? You almost have to insure anything beyond what another hasn't insured their responsibility for.

Today's timepiece of choice is obviously a cell phone though. The iPhone has an application that tracks time zones globally. The beauty of your cellular phone time piece, you never reset it, your carrier maintains that for you, that means coming off and going on daylight savings time, resetting it for a new year. You can call people with it, surf the internet, text, email, it's even a GPS these days. For the times you'll need a dress watch, a clone Rolex fills that role nicely.

One of my good friends has a real Rolex. On more than once occasion, when we've been out, I've noticed it getting many looks and double-takes. People definitely notice it!

I wonder, though, how many people look at it and just think 'fake'? I mean... its probably more likely that you see a fake one than a real one.

But... what do I know? He married a Miss America contestant, so it must've worked in attracting the ladies!

I think it's just silly to spend so much money on something that tells the time. The only reason why I spend a little more money on watches than most people is: comfort and reliability.

I have read alot about watches over the years. I own arond 200 watches of various brands incuding Rolex..I have a Submariner..a GMT2 a Daytona and a Datejust... I also have Russians and Swiss. I can tell you all there is nothing like an ETA or Valjox movement. They are sexy in sound and in function. I suggest what ever watch you buy get a ETA 2824..2836..2896 or a 7750 in your watch...I have Miyota movements as well and are hard working automatics....but an ETA is the sexiest sound to a watch geek like me. Price and shop out there to those who seek a fine time piece. You can get nice watches like Oniss or Nicolet with ETA movements for the price of a fake Rolex.. I wear Croton more than my Rolex...still with the 2824 ETA movement...It's all what tickles your fancy.......JIM

I have a SS Sub and an SS Daytona and will soon (hopefully) have a WG Daytona Meteorite. Funny thing is I am FAR from wealthy. My watches are a personal indulgence and have sparked many a pleasant conversation. All are comfortably understated and to most just look like another cheap tin watch. I'm OK with that. I don't wear them to impress others. That's exactly the reason I don't own a yellow gold or diamond Rolex...too flashy for my taste. But to each his own.

My son will one day inherit a timepiece with a unique history. My SS Sub has seen combat in Afghanistan, Iraq and soon Afghanistan again. It's nice when you are in some of the worst environments imaginable but can look down and see a Rolex on your wrist. I hope my son will appreciate his REAL Rolex as I have.

I have owned an authentic Rolex for about 15 years now, and I love it. Recently while on business in Manila, my Rolex stopped working. The service fee for an authorized repair center in the USA is about $500 - $700. I took it to an authorized Rolex repair ceneter in Manila, and it cost me about $200 for the same service. In the meantime, because I missed my watch, I bought a really good fake for abouy $10 USD that I have grown to love. I alternate between the fake and the authentic, and hands down get more compliments on the fake than on the authentic Rolex.

P.S. I DRIVE AN F-150 AND IT'S REAL TOO!

To all you people who left a comment on Rolex watchs(fake or real), I own both, I paid good money for both of them. I hear all the BS on why pay so much money for a watch that only tells time, you all have no clue what it takes to make a fine watch like a Rolex, the craftmenship, and the time to assemble it, and depending on the watch, there is from 150 to 200 parts that are precisely put together by a Master Jeweler. I know that means nothing to you all, people spend hundreds of thousand of dollars on there home...WHY? People spend thousands on a Luxury car...WHY? People spend thousands of dollars on drugs...WHY? People who spend thousands of dollars on stupid baskets(Longaberger)...WHY? It's a basket, I have seen these baskets, I own a few, but there not Longaberger, and they DO the the same thing as the HIGH dollar baskets, they hold things. Spending thousands on a home is ok, it will increase in value, Spending thousands on a Luxury Car...Bad Idea, it will only decrease in value as time goes by. In 10 years your 25K car will be worth 5K, as for the Rolex, in 10 years it will be either worth the same as purchased, or a lot more than he or she paid for it, I'm leaning toward worth more than purchased for. SO get off our backs, it's an INVESTMENT, I know some can't do that kind of investment and wear it, but some of us can. I own two of them, I own my home(nothing fancy), I own my truck(01 Dodge Ram), I have a decent job from going to school(No college), all of which was accomplised from hard work and saving my money. I know people who spend thousands of dollars on guns and scopes...WHY. I own a couple of both that cost me Hundreds and do the exact same thing, so why buy the HIGH dollar guns when the cheap ones do the same thing(put food on the table)?? My watch can't put food on the table right now, but if I was to sell them, I would have double the amount of food I could purchase in 5 years that would last 20 years. Try getting double for the stupid things that you all buy(home and land excluded), and try to invest in things that will help you in the long run. And don't give me that BS that I only make this...SHUT UP, and go back to school and get something that will make you more money. And you say...easier said than done...BULLSHIT, your just LAZY, I don't care what kind of situation your in, it CAN be done. And because I worked my ass off to buy these things doesn't mean you can steal them from me YOU LAZY ASSES. GET A JOB people. They say we are in a ression...BS, all I see where I shop is...Hiring All Jobs, and I live in a small town, if you live in a big town, I'm guessing there a lot of jobs right now. So quit relying on our government, there going broke quick due to your new President, and watch for the NEW energy Tax that they are trying to pass, our Government wants all of your money to fund this, your president will/has put us in debt so far that we will NEVER be able to recover, he has spent more money than all of the presidents put together. Think about it, and Have a Nice Day!

Hey GQ, lighten up man. My girlfriend purchased an Explorer II for my 40th birthday. I came upon this site not because of doubt in it's maker, but just looking up general information during a slow day on Wall Street. Totally unexpected gift and could not be happier. I use to think a Rolex was a sign of status.....not so now. Rolex is a brilliant piece of engeneering sitting on your wrist. You'll know it when you take it out of the box. Go to a dealer, pay the $$$, be happy. Why would anyone want to wear a fake? Rolex and all hi-end watches deserve the respect and hard work it takes to obtain it.

Practical Rolex Owner  says:

Good evening,

When logging on to this site, I had intentions on learning how to identify a fake Rolex. Through years of hard work and dedication, I had finally reached a point in my life and career which enabled me to purchase my first Rolex watch. The purchase was made from an authorized retailer who shared my joy of owning such a fine piece. When considering why I felt that a Rolex was my timepiece of choice, many things crossed my mind. 1. Status: In perspective, my other non-Rolex watch typically catches the eye of most folks. Since wearing my watch in public, I've noticed that with so many replicas in circulation, having a Rolex on my wrist did not draw any unusual amount of attention. Folks were not stopping me in my tracks to ask "Is that a Rolex?". 2. Durability: Face it, if you wear a watch, it will eventually show signs of wear. Oyster bands typically show light scratches from normal wear and tear. While these scratches are able to be polished out by a certified, reputable jeweler, they are part of the beauty obtained by wearing such a fascinating watch through life. It's a bond that any Rolex owner develops with their watch. Although I am meticulous with keeping my watch clean, I have adopted the philosophy that life's wear and tear marks are to be looked upon much like a badge of honor. It's part of wearing the watch through life with me. 3. Reliability: I've got to say, the watch has seemed to be very reliable and will serve me with a lifetime of memories made while wearing it. This brings me to my original purchase reason; 4. Something to pass on: Someone else said it - What not a better heirloom to pass to a son or daughter. While many would interject with the opinion that a watch is just a watch, I tend to feel slightly stronger for what a Rolex signifies to me. With the appreciation I've developed for what a genuine Rolex is, and to each their own, it is something that can be passed from generation to generation with a continual story to tell. In my opinion, if you are wearing a replica, no matter how authentic it may appear, you are only depriving yourself from the sense of accomplishment that can only be achieved by owning an original. In addition, you clearly feel that portraying yourself to be successful will bring you more success. While this may hold true for some areas, such as implying a sense of power or presence at the local bar, being spotted wearing a replica may be more damaging to your image than simply wearing a fashionable, reliable timepiece. Moral of the story: A path to success may come easier for some, but certainly will not be determined by wearing an expensive timepiece. Nothing is impossible if you exhort the effort and work hard to succeed. Do the right things in life; be a respectable citizen and understand that not everything in life will come easy, and not everything will always go your way. Learn and practice a positive work ethic - When thrown a curve ball, stay in the batters box and learn how to hit it. Now, when an authentic Rolex becomes affordable from all of your hard work and commitment, there are few things in life that will bring you the great sense of accomplishment that is achieved when fastening the watch around your wrist for the first time. Just make sure you are making the purchase from an authorized Rolex retailer. Thank you.

I am about 21 and i have gold datejust actually a real one!before that I had an steel oysterdate. In fact those ones who wear a fake rolex are some people that do want to have a real one but they do not afford it.Rolex is the most famous watch in the world and is a big asset that in any time you can change it to money but not other brands as it gets older it will be more fashionable and more expensive. So if you pay 100 USD on a fake one why dont you buy a real Q&Q or Romanson with that money.

Lario  says:

Why spending much if you can show that you have the Rolex watch? Even fake or not your image is the same when you're at high gatherings. Always people don't bother to ask you whether it's fake or not. But you've got the same enjoyment. The thing is Rolex is considered as high priced mechanical jewelry and it's subject to damage by long use. So spare the original one for you to keep it for life.

Practical Rolex Owner  says:

Duaradonme,

I would like to be quick to point out that many of the folks who are posting here have either had a Rolex passed on to them, or they have made an investment in something for themselves to cherish over time. Obviously, we value your opinion and thank you for sharing your thoughts with us, however, you should not be so quick to judge others. By donating a year or more, what exactly do you mean? Are you referring to donating time or money? If that be the case, I would not be alone in saying that many of us, myself included, do both. I think you are missing the point here. If you read through many of the posts, you will also notice a common denominator; that being a significant amount of saving and dedication until such a timepiece is brought within an affordable range, therefore, it is would not be fair to indicate that this post is entirely consisted of over privileged folks living over privileged lives. To break it down even further, I would ask you to make a comparison to a perhaps commonality that you could relate to. Example: If you are a brand name cigarette smoker, we could speculate approximately $4.75/pack x 2 packs per day = $9.50. Over the course of a year, that equates to just under $3500. Next, we need to consider something else. By going to the local bar and spending $50 total per weekend (Friday & Saturday) on a few drinks, and assuming that this only occurs for 40 weekends out of the year, that will quickly equate to an additional $2000. That's approximately $5500 net dollars saved per year for someone to kick the smoking habit and give up a considerable drinking habit. This is a nice trade off for an improved healthy quality of life and more time to spend with family. If someone has the strength and discipline to achieve such an accomplishment, that would be grounds to purchase an authentic Rolex from an authorized Rolex dealer and have the back engraved with the date they decided to help themselves. What an accomplishment by the owner. And boy, that would sure make a nice family heirloom to pass on and would certainly speak a milestone about the originator's character. Just a thought. Can you relate?

There are many other ways I could spend MY money: vacations, cars, flat screen TVs, World Series tickets, etc. None of these would give me the long term pleasure of watches. I plan on passing my down to my children and hopefully grandchildren. You don't have spend a fortune. Check out the following website. www.forwatch.com
