This is a hub were you will read about something as obvious as family dental insurance, or is it so common among families these days? There are 3 types of insurance/choices you have once you have decided to get insured. They have all their own characteristics and choices. Choose the type that suits you best.

The first option you have is..

Dental HMO Insurance Plans

HMO stands for "Health Maintenance Organization" and if you choose this type you are paying a fee to gain entrance to a network of dentists that have agreed to provide dental care for its members. If you want to have work done on your teeth outside the network, then you will have to pay the whole cost from your own pocket.

It's common for HMO insurances to offer free check ups, cleanings, and X-rays every 6 months. If you need some major work done on your teeth such as dentures, crowns, or root canals, then you are required to pay some of the cost for the procedure yourself.

The next option you can choose as a family dental insurance is called Indemnity insurance..

Indemnity Dental Plans

This is an option that will suit you if you want more flexibility. You are allowed to go to any dentist of your own choice. This choice is also called a traditional dental insurance because you pay a deductible to the insurance company before they will go in with coverage. Once you have reached the threshold the insurance will then pay a percentage of the treatment cost and you have to pay the rest. The percentage will very from provider to provider but it's not uncommon that some providers will pay 100% of the costs on preventive treatments such as check ups, X-rays, and cleanings. A drawback with this is that these types of plans is that you have to pay at least $1000 before the insurance kicks in.

The last option you have is something called discount dental plans.

Discount Dental Plans

These type of plans is different from insurance plans. With these plans you pay a discounted price when seeing the dentist. There are no monthly fees, instead you pay a fee of about $100 for 12 - 15 months to get access to the discounts. The discounts are from 10 - 60% in most cases and you pay when you need to see the dentist. Some of these plans also includes free check ups ever 6 months. A discount dental plans can be more affordable because you don't have to pay a premium every month.

Discount dental plans are available for individuals, families, groups and businesses.
