A Few Famous Water Fountains Around the World
77Most people would agree that if there is one compelling item that any city must have in order to be known all over the world… is a water fountain. That is of course if they want to attract more tourists than other cities.
Naturally, the fountain has to be eye catching and it must offer something spectacular. Not all water fountains are created equally and to help prove this fact we have taken the liberty of presenting to you a few of the most famous water fountains in the world.
The first fountain that is an absolute must see can be found in Las Vegas, Nevada. While this is a town filled with sites that have to be seen, none of them compare to the water fountain at the Bellagio. The only word that can describe these fountains is “fabulous!” With professionally choreographed routines where music flows as beautifully as the water, the water stretches up to 460 feet from over 1200 water emitting devices. The Bellagio fountains have been featured in numerous movies, photographs and TV shows. If it has to do with Vegas, then you can bet the Bellagio Fountains will be shown.
From Vegas to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia where we find the King Fahd’s Fountain, this fountain is known for being the highest water fountain in the world. Believe it or not this fountain throws water up 1023 feet. Just to help you visualize how high this is, imagine standing on the ground and looking up to the top of the Eiffel Tower, just before the antenna begins and that is the height of the water. With 3 pumps that send out over 625 liters of water each and every second and an incredible 233 miles per hour.
Next we can head over to Singapore to the city of Suntec. Here within the largest shopping mall in the area is the Fountain of Wealth. This is the largest water fountain in the world. Incredible, it is made of bronze and it has five towering blocks which represent a left hand emerging out of the ground.
Our next fountain is found in Sydney. People caught their first glimpse of the Archibald Fountain in 1932. Since it’s unveiling it has become the favorite fountain in the city. The inspiration for the fountain came from a combination of Greek and Roman art and literature, which is explains the bronze figure of Apollo surrounded by other mythical creatures that spray water out of jets. This fountain was designed by the infamous sculptor Francois Sicard. The purpose of the fountain is to commemorate the alliance of France and Australia during WWII.
Next we visit Moscow. Located in the All Russian Exhibition Center is an absolute must see, the People’s Friendship Fountain. This fountain is also known as the Friendship of Nations, it is octagonal in shape and has 16 gilded maiden statutes all of which are present in their national costumes which represent the now defunct Soviet Union.
A very famous and frequently seen by those just looking for information about Geneva is the Jet d’Eau fountain. Much like the Bellagio fountains, this fountain is located on every piece of tourist information you can find about Geneva. It sits at the point that Lake Geneva empties in the Rhone River. Sending water 124 mph into the sky reaching 460 feet it can be seen throughout the city.
If you are looking for one of the oldest fountains then take a look at what the Tang Dynasty has to offer. The Big Wild Goose Pagoda was built in 652. This fountain is located in a suburb of the Xian City, which is home to the largest musical fountain in Asia, and it has the longest light best in the world. Our best recommendation is that if you are making the trek there to see, make sure you catch it at night.
In Italy we have the Tivoli Fountain located in the Lazio region. This just happens to be one of the most popular day trip destinations for those traveling from Rome. Another name for this fountain is the Tiburtine Fountain.
Finally the last fountain that is well worth mentioning is the Magic Fountain of Montjuic. This fountain was built by Carles Buigas in the late 1920s. It is one of the most spectacular displays of motion, light, color and water acrobatics. Found between Placa d’ Espanya and the National Palau in Barcelona this incredible fountain draws tourist to it each and every night. Again, it is best to view this fountain at night if you really want to catch an amazing show.
