Fantasy Football Week 1 - Start'em or Sit'em
55
Who will shine, and who will crumble in Week 1.
It’s officially on! We've spent weeks compiling facts, crunching numbers, and mock drafting until our heads fell onto our keyboards. We’ve come back from the war room of live or online drafts spending 2-3 hours under extreme pressure and have assembled a team that we can be proud of. So what’s next? We have our boys, we have our sleepers, and it’s all fun in the sun right? WRONG. Week 1 is around the corner and its all business now. Winning a fantasy football championship means 16 weeks of hard work, identifying key matchups and using vital information to help guide your team to pay dirt. The biggest mistake made by a first to second year player is they think that their team is invincible and feel that a player, no matter how highly ranked will achieve greatness in any situation. Fantasy Football is like tournament poker in a way, in order to survive you need to know when to hold em and know when to fold em. So in order to help the rookie player or just to start some good fantasy banter I’ve created this list for you to peruse and maybe keep you from making a crucial mistake for your opening day head to head matchups. So without any more build up, here is the week 1 look.
Week 1 Super Studs!
1. Ladanian Tomlinson @ Oakland Raiders - Last year he crushed our hearts, but week one's opening contest has alot of overlooked storylines. LT is quietly furious with not only his Fantasy predraft position, but also with his substandard Madden raking in 2010. Opening the season at Oakland will provide not only him, but the entire Chargers team with a wonderfull stomping ground on thier road to the Super Bowl. I look for LT to carve Oaktown for 2 Tds and 110 yds.
2. Tom Brady and Randy Moss Vs. Buffalo Bills - We all know that T.O. has a make believe toe injury but it still wont matter in this contest. Brady is looking like his old 50 Touchdown throwing self this season, and Moss is fired up about his fearless leader coming back into town. I dont really see Buffalo putting up much of a fight as they stroll into New England for thier opening game on the road. I see Brady having a seriously wonderfull welcome back game and may toss up to 3 tds and 320 yds in this one. Moss will benefit with 1-2 tds and 105 yds on 6 receptions. Welker will get into the mix as well with around 120 yds recieving.
3. T.J Houshmandzadeh Vs. St Louis Rams- I believe this one is a total no brainer pick, I just like to mention it for there might be 1 person out there who is dueling between starting Housh or Ochocinco in week 1. I believe the Rams are in the lottery for Sam Bradford next year and are giving up thier 2009 campaign for better personell. Stephen Jackson will get a Td in this one but I feel that Hasselbeck is going to throw 2 tds and 215 yds on the way to a Seattle win. I slate Housh for 90 yds and 1 td on 6 receptions.
4. All Houston Texans Vs. New York Jets- This preseason hasn't favored the Houston faithfull but I believe that its all just smoke and mirrors when the Texans open thier season vs. the Jets. Schaub may have a tweeked knee from running out of bounds but it won't stop him from connecting with just about everyone in this game. New York has a decent Qb in Sanchez, but the hostility of the Texans stadium and Mario Williams will have him playing catchup all game. I see Schuab throwing 3 Tds, 240 yds and 1 int, Johnson catching 1Td and 113 Yds on 5 receptions, Slaton for another TD recieving while rushing for 90, and Owen Daniels grabbing himself a score with 65 yds on 4 grabs.
5. Calvin Johnson @ New Orleans- The one thing that the Lions know is that Calvin can catch anything thrown to him and out of every 3 passes thrown by Stafford, 2 will be going Johnsons way.. That is basicly the gameplan when Detroit visits the Saints in week 1. I venture to say that Brees is going to score on just about every New Orleans possession so the Lions will find themselves in an early hole. Thier running game behind Kevin Smith will fare around 75 yds on 22 carries, but if Detroit wants to compete they will need tons through the air. Calvin should rack up about 175 and a TD in a losing effort.
6. Drew Brees Vs. Detroit Lions- The only backfire in starting Brees is that come late 3rd quarter they might pull him to give Mark Brunell some playing time. Ive run every scenerio in my head, and unless Brees drops back and explodes into confetti, He'll throw for roughly 3 Tds and 345 yds in his week one matchup. Detroit can't stop his weapons on the ground or through the air, and being that they still havent officially won a game in 17 contests, its safe to say that there's a legitimate reason Vegas is giving them 13.5 in week 1. Colston will grab a Td and 85 yds on 4 catches, I have Reggie Bush shocking the world and recording a 100 yd recieving day and 1 Td, and Shockey will get a cheap redzone TD in the back of the end zone.
Week 1 Illusions- Guys ya should sit.
1. Michael Turner Vs. Miami Dolphins- I know I'm going to get all kinds of flack for this one, but I really dont see Michael "The Burner" Turner breaking out for much when the Dolphins come to town. Miami's run defense is absolutley sweltering, and even though the Falcons are at home in thier week 1 battle, I think that it is going to be a hard fought low scoring affair. I wouldn't expect more that 85 Yds total out of this years #2 overall in week one. The first three weeks of the season are going to be very tough for him, so don't expect serious results right away. So unless you don't have any other options, I'd sit em.
2. Clinton Portis @ New York Giants- Osi's Back, Its opening day in NYC, Brandon Jacobs is ready to rumble, Eli's rich and satisfied and so will Giants fans. I dont care what the line on this game is, there is no way anyone is coming into Giants stadium on opening day and pushing them around. Jason Cambell is in no way going to pick apart this defense so it will all rest on the fragile shoulders of Mr. Clinton Portis. Not the toughest shoulders in the world, and vs. the ferocious Giants defense, he will not prove to win the day. The game plan is to shut down Portis early and often, then Blitz cambell relentlessly come 3rd quarter. I see Portis mustering a mere 45 yds on the ground and 25 in receptions. The only weapon for the Redskins will be Moss, but I wouldnt start him either. Giants will cruise to a 20-7 win.
3. Donovan Mcnabb @ Carolina Panthers - This was a tough pick to make, I love Philly this year and think that Mcnabb with Vick waiting in the wings will provide a much needed pressure to preform outstandingly on a week to week basis. I don't feel that week 1 will be the game of the ages for Donovan though. Carolina doesn't want to remember thier last home game and wants to start thier season a-new with a statement game letting everyone in the league know that "You don't win when you come to Carolina" I think they are making it their new state motto. I could be wrong here, But I dont think Mcnabb's fantasy numbers will be special, and if your in a league that cuts points for sacks, this could be a risky play. So I am reccomending sitting Mcnabb in this one.
4. Matt Cassel @ Baltimore Ravens - This is hilarious, I'm saying dont start him and it looks like he won't even make it to the field. Assuming that Matt is a go for week 1 (Questionable gametime) and not Brodie Croyle, then let me say dont entertain the thought of starting him for any reason ever. Unless you've hacked into your friends team and want to play the sweetest fantasy prank ever. The Ravens are seriously disturbed defensively and are going to dismember whomever the signal caller is on Sunday. I guarantee you that there will be 2 clips of this game on Monday Night Countdowns "Come on man" segment. Avoid not only Cassel and Croyle this week..but the entire Chiefs team altogether.
5. Ryan Grant Vs. Chicago Bears - What a great game for this years first Sunday Night Football matchup. It's a NFC North battle for supremecy displaying 2 of the finest Qb's of the NFC and thier respective toolboxes of weapons. This game will prove to have it all, big plays, top notch defensive snot bubblers, and a huge highlight reel of passing moments. The one thing it wont have is a Ryan Grant rushing highlight. Chicago and Green Bay have been slugging it out for years, and its always been about stopping the rush and out playing the guy across from you. This year Green Bay has the QB and WR's, but Chicago has the RB and the Defense to stop opposing tailbacks from doing anything on the ground. Sure the Pack ground attack will be at home, but I dont think that they will get alot of production out of Mr. Grant.

Turner is a better play, he may muster a goaline TD. Its going to be a total trenchfight.

Great insite! I agree with Turner and Portis not being able to light it up. I have both and plan on sitting Portis, but I cannot afford to sit Turner as well. Hopefully he can eck out a few for me.
