Farewell to the Dragon
64
A Dragon's Farewell
On a starry night without light of a moon,
a winged creature flies above a world of blue and green.
A dragon of crimson and silver bellows its flame.
A cry to the stars with upturned eyes,
she bids the world below her last goodbye.
She did not serve malice,
or bear evil intent,
she is a creature of goodness,
and magical portent.
She feels pity for the weak creatures below,
for those that slew her mate out of ignorance and fear.
Her mate merely hunted to feed their young,
eggs that shall never hatch lacking seed and love.
A cry of sadness fills the sky,
as the last dragon bids the world goodbye.
Her time has passed as will that of humans,
an arrogant breed,
cruel and filled with greed.
Higher and higher she ascends,
up onto heaven where now she blends,
never to return to her realm
now ruled by men.
Farewell.

Fantastic! I shall share this with a friend who also adores dragons!! Thank you! I can't wait till Frogdropping and Kevin show up to read this!
Sufi, I have always been a fan of fantasy and one my favorite creature from that genre of fiction is the Dragon. As I am sure that you are aware, fantasy writers lift the content of their works from the legends of our past and one of the most interesting aspects of these legends is humanity's infatuation with Dragons.
Candie, you are welcome as always :)
Very nice....liked it a lot. The opening picture is amazing and I also liked the video. Loved the dragon-purring
Trooper>>>I know nothing about poetry so I can't give a knowing response to it. The message was "on-the-money." I did like the dragon flick...."cool!" :-)
Alekehouse, thank you. I can not take credit for the video, and as you you can see I can only take credit for the theme and the poem. The Top photo is a wood cut from 19th Century Japan, the lower image is from 15th Century Europe. My reason for adding these images is to illustrate the international infatuation with these majestic, albeit mystical creatures.
Qwark, the message is all that matters friend, thanks for stopping by.
An Excellent read.
Thanks for stopping by bgpappa :)
You write a damn good poem Trooper, that was A1. xo
Thanks for the dragons side. A classic take on the dragons tale.
Wow Trooper, if you are gonna do fantasy now it opens up a whole realm. Pegasus and unicorns, mermaids and centaurs...
Excellent Poem! So sad an allegory for man's lost innocence?
Sad and haunting - you can almost hear the dragon's cry - loved it Trooper and you've chosen some wonderful pictures!
BP, flattery will get you poetry :)
PM, you're welcome as always.
Randy, I have been thinking about that, perhaps some Elves, and Gnomes and such as well.
Sixtyorso, in a way yes. It would seem since man has taken up intensive agriculture and pastoralism we have forgotten what it is to be one with our environment. What was shared became horded, was bountiful became fenced, and exterminated.
Shalini, thank you :)
trooper
it's a good out thing our imagination is one frontier that cannot be controlled nor destroyed by another. so there dwells the last of the dragons. cool poetry my friend, thanks for sharing :D

Trooper - where did that come from? I am a long way from being an expert on poetry, but I liked that a lot. We have a horrible habit of destroying that which we do not understand.
I miss dragons, too :(
