Farrah Fawcett, Jersey Girls and More Big Hair
77Farrah Fawcett was everything a girl could want to be. Famous (a legend actually), beautiful, and that hair...that hair...how do you describe the perfection of her hair. I can remember growing up in New Jersey and watching Farrah on "Charlie's Angels". Her hair was everything every girl wanted their hair to be. Thick, long, feathered and big...it didn't get any better than Farrah.
Farrah was the influence of so much big hair in the 1980's. Her claim to fame in "Charlie's Angels" came in 1976, but it took us until the 80's to perfect the style. I remember everyone wanted to have "Farrah hair". Girls feathered, plumped and permed their hair to get the look. As this look took off it lead to even bigger and better hair.
It lead to the 1980's...and where better to live than New Jersey, home of the big hair. We had so many big hair styles. There was big long hair and big short hair. For special occasions we had big prom hair and big wedding hair. Bon Jovi, king of big celebrity hair, hailed from New Jersey. There was big bar hair, big city hair and like everyone else, the next morning we had big bad hair.
This one's for you, Farrah Fawcett, and the influence you had on our lives.
Farrah Fawcett
Farrah Fawcett was born February 2, 1947 in Corpus Christie, TX. She was voted "Most Beautiful" by her high school graduating class. She became a household name while acting in the TV series, "Charlie's Angels". She left the series because she felt it was frivolous and she wanted to be a serious actress.
Farrah's hard work and persistence made her dreams come true. She has been nominated at least 4 times for the Golden Globe award and at least three times for an Emmy. Her first Golden Globe nomination was for "Actress in a Leading Role - Drama". In 2003 she was inducted into the Texas Film Hall of Fame. Not bad for the girl who started out as Jill Monroe.
Farrah has been active in charity work against domestic violence. Her film, "The Burning Bed" in 1984 included a public service message by Farrah and a 1-800 number that women could call for help. This movie eventually led to at least three states changing their laws regarding domestic violence.
Farrah bio
"The reason that the all-American boy prefers beauty to brains is that he can see better than he can think."
"God made man stronger but not necessarily more intelligent. He gave women intuition and femininity. And, used properly, that combination easily jumbles the brain of any man I've ever met."
"But I must never forget how blessed I have been. God has given me gifts and happiness, beyond any of my simple desires. My deepest desire now is to simply live,... So with hope and determination, I'd hold on and go on."
Vanna White
Vanna White was born February 18, 1957 in North Myrtle Beach, SC. She began as the co-star of "The Wheel of Fortune" on December 13, 1982. The American public found another sweetheart that day. Vanna stayed with "The Wheel of Fortune" until it was cancelled in 1991.
Vanna remained an American sweetheart throughout the 1980's. Vanna was "Barbie" come alive. Vanna was the girl who showed us all how to brandish an object on display without having any eyes leave the brandisher. We all know that famous Vanna stance.

Reba made the Top 10 for the first time in August 1980. She has been called "The Queen of Country" and is the second best selling female artist. A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame bears her name. She has received multiple awards spanning the last 25 years.

"Do you really want to know why I'm doing all this goodwill, and why I'm an ambassador for Habitat for Humanity and why I gave a million to [relief efforts for Hurricane] Katrina? It's because I feel guilty about the huge hole in the ozone layer my haircuts created. It's my responsibility to right the wrongs of the Eighties."

This is a remarkable hub talking about those great people. My icon here is Bon Jovi :)
I have both Farrah and Olivia in my prayers. They are going through some tough stuff these days.
On to the fluff; I miss my 80's hair style! It was big and fun and I was SO young.
Farrah was our idol in the 70's, especially those of us with 2 toddlers and a rented house that looked like a bomb hit on any day of the week at any given time! She was the big deal and we all wanted to look like her...fat chance!
Now we just want her to move on in peace. Fame doesn't always give you a good life; in fact, it is often a curse. We still love her! You go girl!
Also, good hub and fun to read. Good job!
k@ri - farrah rocked in CA - don't think it was quite the same after she left.
Love how you hubbed this - I'm a bit of a fan of such info. True frog fact ;)
Jmell, Farrah is one of a kind!
shamelebboush, Bon Jovi is something! Jon Bon Jovi seems to be a pretty decent person also.
Madison, I was reading about Farrah, and she was such an influence on my generation, it made me sad. When I was in school, everyone tried to imitate her look. Thanks for stopping by!
frogdropping, Farrah always rocked! I'm glad you liked this one, and thanks for sharing the true frog fact! :D
In 6th grade, I had a Farrah Fawcett jersy. The one with your top pic on it. They made me turn it inside out at school because her nipples showed.
I was in junior high as well when that poster was popular and I remember t-shirts with that poster were forbidden as well for the same reason.
Great hub, Kari! I especially enjoyed the quote from each performer.
Hello, k@ri! I had a big crush on both Farrah Fawcett and Olivia Newton-John back then! Oh sweet torture! Laugh!
I enjoyed this hub very much, thanks for the memories!
Paper Moon, You nasty boy you...wearing a picture with nipples, LOL! I'm surprised they didn't send you home to change.
KCC, I'm glad you liked the quotes. I was surprised at how some of them were pretty hard to find quotes from.
Hi Elena! You certainly have good taste! They were and are wonderful.
Wonderful hub. Farrah was also a fine arts major in college and has produced some nice work of her own. She's an incredible woman. I highly recommend watching "Farrah's Story"--very moving. All great women here. Reba McIntyre has helped/performed at the Muhammed Ali "Fight Night" for Barrow Neurological Institute for the past several years.
And there was the time my husband met Bon Jovi while he was touring the states on motorcyle one summer and loaned his drums for a song to his crew when he wanted to "sit in" and perform a few songs. (Wish I had been there, but we were fighting at the time!)
Believe it or not, I once had hair! It was so long ago, though, I barely remember it!
Great Hub! I love the way you write!
Yay this brought me back straight to the 80s - a decade where women absolutely did not have a monopoly on big hair - well at least when it comes to rock music!
Great memories and nostalgia always make for an entertaining hub! Thanks for sharing :D
Dink, I was upset when I read about Farrah. She is a wonderful lady, and an icon to at least one generation. I'm sorry you missed Bon Jovi. I was surprised at how much respect I gained for him when I did the research. Turns out he's not just another pretty face!
Tom, I think you look wonderful the way you are. Thanks for stopping by! :D
Cris, Women most certainly did not have a monopoly on big hair back then. At least not in NJ, where I was at the time. The men's hair was as wild as the women's. I'm glad you liked it, and yes, I agree, nostalgia is fun!
Love this hub its just fabulous. All these women of a simialr age and so amazing. Good wishes to Farrah
ethel, Thanks for stopping by, I'm glad you liked it! They are amazing women!
Woh, Blast from the past. Memories of great times thats forsure. Charlies angels and farrah were my fav and Grease is still my all time fav movie, A bit cheesy I know but man all us girls wanted to look like those girls.
Thanks for a very well put together hub
babedoll, I don't think it is cheesy at all! I can not remember one woman who did not want to have " Farah" hair. Grease was entirely different. Took us back to when it was a better time. Great memories that is for sure!
Charlies Angles, now that takes me back although Cheryl Ladd was my fav but back in those halcyion days I would have taken any of the 3, or all three at once lol, enjoy yer weekend !
My Husband fixed the A/C in the Fawcetts home in Houston in the 80's...so we know her well hehehe!
I think these are all great role models...still just remember 'us' the Mom's, Wives and all the others.
I have Multiple Sclerosis and try to educate others about the disease. I am a Mom, A wife and many other hats we all wear!
The Challenges that Farrah has faced in these recent years makes her my hero! Not the fancy hair or the celebrity standing...just her! There in the battle and fighting!
Hi k@ri, nice hub. I better not say more. hehe
badcompany, You and almost all the men I know, LOL! You have a wonderful weekend!
TexasChickiMama, Here's to moms, wives and women everywhere! Yes, it's the strength that Farrah displays that makes her a hero.
ralwus, Glad you liked it! You don't need to say anymore, the laugh says it all. :D
This Hub does bring back memories. Although the big hair craze did get a little extreme over time, I still think there was something very nice about the makeup and hair that was "going on back then" (at least before the big hair got too ridiculous). :)
Lisa, I agree, it was very nice until it became "extreme". Thanks for stopping by!
Wow .. I thank you for writing such an awesome hub with great info. What a creative idea to do such a great tribute to not only "BIG HAIR"...but all of the greats you mentioned. God bless poor Farah in her ongoing battle, and Olivia also. Thanks again.. Erin
erin, Thanks for stopping by! Farrah is a great lady, and so is Olivia.
I'm a Farrah fan too! She will always be my number one angel and Olivia is so adorbale and a very kind person!
compu-smart, Farrah was wonderful, and Olivia still is! Thanks for the comment.
The 80's, BIG Hair, Farrah, and New Jersey! I grew up in N.J., and loved your hub!
Donna
Donna, Thanks! I grew up in Jersey also...what a fun place! :D

- TV Review: Jaclyn honors Farrah: In new EW issueEntertainment Weekly36 hours ago
As part of our Late Greats tribute package, EW asked the friends and colleagues to share their memories of the stars we lost in 2009. I think what made Farrah work was that she was so sexy, yet there was that girl-next-door quality about her, so she didn’t alienate people.
