Wearing Contact Lenses: Fashion or Need?

When contact lenses have optical power, they are a need. But what happens when they only change the color of your eyes, not having any influence on your sight whatsoever? Is this still a need?

Fashion contact lenses are a need, although some older people may think otherwise. The need for beauty, the race for beauty nowadays starts from very young ages, so we have to do whatever we can to stay competitive. There are mothers who train their daughters to behave in the high society, by making them participate to beauty contests for children, even from the age of three or four.

We are educated that way: women have to be beautiful at any given time, therefore many women spend countless hours in working their body, treating their skin, putting on the make-up, or arranging their hair, until they are pleased with the result. Then they go out for work, or school, or whatever else activities they may have during the day. When coming back home at night, exhausted after the day, guess what are women doing? They are spending even more time in removing all those artificial things that made them appear beautiful in their peers' eyes. There's no wonder that modern women can hardly find time to just relax, do nothing or maybe read a book or a magazine. When you spend two hours staring at yourself in a mirror, plus 10 hours at your job, plus one hour to wash off those things you've spent two hours to put on, plus 8 hours of sleep, you're left with three hours for shopping, household chores, cooking, eating and doing whatever else you want.

I digress a bit from our fashion contact lenses topic, because I want to add some more about the prison a woman's body is, thanks to the modern society which sets the beauty standards so high that very few girls can cope with them.

It's not fair, but there has been studies which showed that beautiful people get better job and better salaries than ugly people. The difference is about 10%-15%, which is quite big, I could say. It definitely pays off to wear blue fashion contact lenses if this can grant you a raise, because your boss hates your green eyes. Well, I'm exaggerationg a bit, but unfortunately, in many cases, beauty pays off.

The most peculiar fashion contact lenses I've ever seen

Last Halloween, I had a costume online shop. While looking through the searches people found my shop for, I noticed some I would have never thought of such as Halloween contact lenses, vampire contact lenses or zombie contact lenses. I wasn't selling such stuff, but I did a search to see what I was missing. With a pair of cosmetic lenses, you can have a realistic disguise as a vampire or a zombie. I have to admit I'm not such a big fan of scary movies and characters, so I wouldn't like my friends to appear dressed up like that at my parties, as I'd get a bit scared and maybe have some nightmares after the party.

As I haven't found a lot of photos with fashion contact lenses types and colors, I'm publishing here the video below, where you'll see some freaky contacts as well as some deep blue and some violet, beautiful ones.

If you want to wear such contacts, theoretically you don't need a medical prescription, as they come with zero refractive power. However, if you've had some eyes conditions in the past, it would be advisable that you ask your opthalmologist if fashion contact lenses are safe for your case.

I was actually thinking of getting some fashion contacts, but I hate the idea of putting something in my eyes. Besides, I've had iridotomies in both eyes, to releave the pressure caused by glaucoma. That's when they use a lazer to make tiny holes in the cornea. I don't know if covering up the holes is such a good idea, have to ask my eye doctor.

Why do you say: "...although some older people may think otherwise: "? I'm an "older" person, and I would certainly consider them for fashion or aesthetic reasons. As you get older, the color starts to fade in your eyes and cataracs start to form. It makes your irises look grey. So wouldn't colored contacts brighten them up? Wadaya think?

Wow, I've never heard of iridotomies before. I hope you're feeling fine now. Maybe it would be the best to ask your doctor about those contacts.

Those "older persons" are some of my aunts who believe that piercing, tatoos, cosmetic surgery or fashion contacts are artificial and that nobody should be playing with the holy body God gave us.

I surely don't agree with them. I'm all for doing such improvements that make us feel better and more confident in ourselves.

Yes, colored contact lenses can make you look beautiful, or an alien.
