Finding the Perfect Jeans for a Big Booty

Before I begin, let me just start by saying I am the proud owner of some serious booty. I’m half middle-eastern and I take after the women on that side of the family. My older sister (same father, different mother) takes after her (Irish) mother’s side of the family. 10 years ago, while holidaying together, my sister asked our father how you could spot a Persian woman.

His answer? (And I quote) “They’re usually short and have a big butt – like your sister.” That being me. Thanks, Dad.

Actually, I should be thanking him, because until that day, I really didn’t know I had one. I always just thought I was semi-fat, because I could never find a pair of jeans that actually fit my booty. Why? Well, because my legs and waist were a size 6, but my butt so wasn’t having any part of that. Why not? Because Levi’s (and most other brands back then) seemed to think every woman on earth was booty-less. So a butt like mine could only fit into a pair of 10’s.

The problem with that, was the waist was too big and gapped up, making me look 5 months pregnant. Or, the thighs were too big – which made me look like I was packing 10 gallon saddle bags. Ladies, a tip you can apply to most aspects of fashion – clothing several sizes too big only makes you look several sizes bigger. Unless you’re Kate Moss, in which case, you'll just look like you need a ham sandwich, or three.

8 Tips for Finding the Perfect Jeans for a Big Booty:

1. Stretch is your friend!

By “stretch”, I’m referring to jeans that have a combination of cotton and spandex. No, not a lot of spandex. A little dab will do, we don’t want you looking like you belong in an 80’s workout video! How much? 99% cotton, 1% lyrca is a good blend. Just enough to give. We don’t want it getting all out shape to the point it makes you look like you’re the next size up.

2. Dark colors will brighten your day!

If you’re a truly bootilicious woman, you’re probably conscious about your size on occasion. Wearing light blue is the equivalent of wearing white. You will look at least 50% wider in the hips, if nothing else. We want to embrace our booty – cos, let’s face it, big booty is sexy – but we don’t want people focusing on it too much. Dark blue has a nice slimming effect. I personally recommend avoiding black, as it has a tendency to go yuck when it fades. Not flattering.

3. Buy the smallest jeans with stretch that you can *fit* into.

Yes, you read that correctly. And by “fit" into, I mean get all the way zipped and still be able to walk. I say this because stretch jeans WILL stretch a bit. If you buy your regular size, by the end of the day they will be too big in some areas. If you buy the next size down, they will stretch as well, usually resulting in a nice, sexy mold of your body. I am not recommending you wear skin tight jeans and be uncomfortable. I personally hate that look. I’m recommending you buy a tight-ish fit, bum around your house in them for an evening, and then put them away in a pre-stretched mode. Next time you put them on they should feel nice and form fitting, but not uncomfortable.

4. Stick with a classic Boot Cut

If you have a big booty and you slip into some Skinny Fit, Flare or otherwise obviously styled jeans, that is going to draw attention to your jeans, which will only make your booty look bigger. Your best bet is a simple boot cut jean, that straightens your leg and doesn’t draw too much attention to the contrast between thin legs and a big booty. Nor do you want to draw attention to big thighs by wearing something tight around your knee and calves. I see a lot of people recommending a flare leg to even out a big booty and wide hips. My advice is to take each pair of jeans as they come – because this advice often draws people’s attention straight to the waist, hips and thighs – and keeps it there. Which probably isn’t where you want it.

5. Low rise jeans are not as bad as you think.

This style does wonders when you have a normal sized waist, normal hips and thighs, but a big booty. As I mentioned earlier, finding jeans that fit the booty often results in extra material gapping at the waist. Low-rise jeans prevents that for obvious reasons. Just make sure you check the rise – if you are petite from the waist down, a regular low rise jean might still reach your hips, causing the same problem.

6. We want high pockets set close to the center.

You don’t want pockets set low, they will make your booty look saggy. You also want them set close to center, cos the more lateral they appear, the wider your booty will look!

7. And now, the most important part!

The "yoke" is the key factor in the booty coverage. Look at the pic up there and you'll see a nice example of what I mean. The part below the waist and above your pockets – that strip of fabric there – that’s the most important part of the booty coverage! A lot of jeans have a thin, rectangle shape there, which results in little coverage for the arc of a big booty, resulting in the dreaded plumber style. You want this part to form a wide, soft V shape, coming to a point over your pockets. This will help your butt look more curved from the top, and give it a lifted look.

8. Lastly, my jeans recommendation:

You don’t have to spend 200 bucks on a pair of jeans to get good coverage. I have tried countless brands over the years, and nothing suits my booty like The Gap’s Stretch, Low Rise, Straight waist, Boot Cut jeans. I love them, and they are highly affordable. Do you some booty exercises, and your jeans will look even better. Alright, ladies, go out there and get you come booty lovin’ jeans and don't forget - real men love curves!

xx Isabella

THIS is an EXCELLENT write up Isabella. You articulated every single issue a 26 waist 38 hip girl like me has had and gradually figured out with trying to find the right jeans. I wish I'd read this a few months ago before buying my DKNY stretch jeans! They're perfect right after laundry, then they stretch a lil too much so I have to spray them with water and throw them in the dryer to shrink again.

Thanks for the article!

You're very welcome, Lara! :))) Took me 10 years to figure it out, myself. ;)

You're article is great and very informative. I, as well, love Gap jeans, but the issue I'm having is that I have a 30 inch waist and 51 inch thighs. I can't find any jeans to fit me. I have tried everything and every brand. Unfortunately, but fortunately, some of them do come in my size. The problem is that I have absolutely no stomach at all and for some reason the jeans that I do purchase, always end up having a lot of stomach room, so I end up with extra jean that I did not pay for. Can you please advise on where I can find something more suitable for my size? Thanks.

Isabella Snow  says:

Hi Charlotte! I'm glad you liked the article, thank you! :) My advice to you would be to check out the Rise in your jeans. They are not all equal, and neither are our bodies! If you have a flat stomach and the hips fit correctly, you might simply have too high a rise.

For example, Im short, but I have longish legs for my height. Which means I have a shorter torso. So if I buy regular length jeans, the rise that would be normal (the distance from crotch to waist) is too long for me.

The result is a gaping waist that wont stay up, or pooches out.

The solution (if this is your issue) is to try and find low waisted jeans to offset this problem. Or you can try to find some regular jeans with specific rise, websites often list measurements.

I hope this helps! Good luck!

I only have abt an 8inch difference between my waist and hips... I'm a pretty curvy woman and have a decent size but I have a difficult time finding jeans that give me the hour glass figure I'm looking for... I'm tall, have a long torso and unfortunately do not have a flat stomach....

becca  says:

My problem is how to get jeans that dont sag in front! I am well blessed in the booty section and my jeans look great from behind ( well if you ignore the gaping waistline) My front however always sags a,d I have to wear long shirts to cover it! Any ideas ? Oh and I am tall with heavy thighs and a smallish waist

Isabella Snow profile image

Isabella Snow  says:

Bee - I'll have to think about that one.. I'm not sure at the moment.. :)

Becca - The answer to that is probably super low rise jeans. the rise is the part from crotch to top of the jeans waist - if its gaping on you, there's likely too much material there.. i have this problem too. My suggestion is going into a jeans shop and trying on very low rise - if you are naturally petite in that area (this doesnt mean skinny, this means shorter than the average woman) super low rise will look more like a normal length on you. Honest, its the same issue I have. A 10 inch rise suits most women fine, but on me its super high! :)

I read your blogs and I have taken your advice on the rise of my jeans, but I still seem to have a HUGE gap in the back of my jeans. I have not tried the super low rise, because most of them do not come in longer inseams. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Isabella Snow profile image

Isabella Snow  says:

The Gap makes super low rise in length 32 and 34, give them a try.. or are you longer than that? Though I have to say, a gap in the *back* is not something women with big booty experience.. our trouble is finding more coverage, not less.. are you someone with a big booty? If so, I can't imagine why you'd have a gap in the back.. a gap in the front, yes.. but not the back...?

chass  says:

Yes, I have a lot of booty and a very small waste. Did I say a lot of booty. The 32 and 34 inch inseam jeans don't seem to work for me. I definitely need an extra long 36 inch inseam. The inseam is not the issue it's getting them to fit around my waste.

Isabella Snow profile image

Isabella Snow  says:

So you meant the gap is in the waist, and not in the back of the jeans? Then your problem is in the rise - you need to get ultra low. If supermodels with 8 mile legs can find them, I'm sure you can too! You sound tall! Try the Gap's Long and Lean! :)

This has been my problem since high school. The only jeans that fit my hips and thighs are too big around the waist. I used to think there was something wrong with my body, now I believe there's something wrong with the jeans! Haha! :-D Great article, Isabella.

Isabella! Great HUB! That section of the jeans you were searching for in #7 is called a 'YOKE'. In the '70 they also referred to that section in a cutting pattern as the saddle cut...

I've dealt with these type of problems for many years in my tailor-shop. I also agree that clothes have to be great fitting; not too big but neither should they look too tight.

Great HUB as always

Hey you should try Jeans by PZI. Go to pzijeans.com. I have never in my life been able to find jeans. I have a small waist and a bubble butt and big thighs, my hips are not all that wide everything is behind me and all three of my sisters have flat butts. Theses jeans come in 31, 34 and 36" inseams for those of you that are tall. They are a little on the expensive side but look at the clearance. I have purchased 5 pairs from there site and only one did not fit but they fit my friend perfectly. Let me know what other options you hear of. I see you mention the Gap jeans but I have never tried them. Thanks, Denise

Isabella - BRAVO! As fate would have it, I found your Hub after a night of jean shopping where I literally tried on 18 different pair! ARGH! Came home empty handed! Ladies - who knew we'd need a support group...gotta love the internet. I'm a 12 in the waist and probably more like an 18 in the hip/booty region. I hate HATE going shopping for jeans.

Good advice on Gap - haven't tried. Not sure why, guess the stigma of all their skinny models. Also, great tip on PZI jeans, Denise. I'm going to check eBay for those, too.

For plus sized girls, Lane Bryant has a new sizing system called "Right Fit". Blue tags mean your waist is considerably smaller than your butt. Just fyi. My only complaint with these is the random "V" on the back pockets...to me, it just screams "Hey, these are Venezia jeans from Lane Bryant, the fat girl store!" Maybe that's just me. :P

LOL maybe I'm hanging around the wrong kind of Persian but at least 95% of the slim built ones (like myself) that I've come across had, er, "normal" size asses. Maybe big booty is more a dilemma for us half-Persians. A 25" waist with a 37" hip/ass is a lot of junk for me to carry around, but somehow I've managed. To jiggle incessantly during any kind of activity, that is. Ack!

I'm certain I got my love bumper from my American mom though. BUT, my mom's ass is like two halves of a pumpkin--big and hard. Hmmm!

Kinda pricey (a good pair of jeans that fit is worth it), try Lucky wonder jean. The buckle even altered them for me free of charge to fix the little bit of gap in the back. The wonder jean also has the "V" shaped yoke in the back. The altering didn't look like grandma stitched them up either. I couldn't even tell. They fit great and will always buy my good jeans there.

Wow, this article helped me out a lot! I'm 5'8 and wear a size 10-11 cos of my big butt, and lately I've been having trouble finding nice jeans that fit me right. Especially since skinny and flare are all the rage right now, and like you said, people think women have no butts. But this article definitely helped out a lot. Now i have weapons to attack the jean section of stores, and not be so intimidated anymore by jean shopping. Thank you soooo much! :)

Big booty girls unite. Thanks for the information. I will stop being frustrated over my big booty and lack of available jeans. I plan on visiting the GAP this week and will check out PZIjeans.com.

Big butts are great, stop trying to come up with ways to hide them. The only guys who don't enjoy a nice big, round butt are the ones who enjoy nice big, round man butts. Shake em ladies.

I too have a good sized bootie. In fact that is probably the feature I get the most compliments on. This article was fantastic! Especially since you were right on on everything! I do wear Gap stretch flare jeans! The flare works better for my 5'9 height but I know what you mean about it drawing attention. I'll have to send this on to my boyfriends family now since they are all Persian and would love this! Good job!

I own a bubble butt..25 waist and 40-42 hips..I have no idea why, i´m swedish and am supposed to rock a more appleshaped butt.. but I guess the butt magic arent racistic. :) I can never find pants, but I always buy pants that are a couple of sizes to big and wear with a small belt but they get wrinkly on the waist. cannot understand why they don´t produce more jeans sizes, calculated by various body types instead. it should not be so very hard, they could do like 5 different shape variations. anyway I can recommend swedish brand cheap monday, they are very very strechty.

btw..ofcourse its good to rock a bubble butt because most men likes it, and I feel impressive and with great stamina (lol) but sometimes I get evil glares from girls..some actually think I do a sort of pout-out like a wannbe pinup but I never do, I+m just built that way..! well they´re just jealous ;)

You girls are crrrazy! trying to hide the booty. Big booty on the mall is like the pied piper leading all the guys to their ruin. They all form a bee-line to give praise and thanks, one-by-one.

And I am outraged that there isn't a single big brand catering for the (however scarce) big booty community. I thought they'd be falling over themselves to get their brand mark on the best thing going out threre. They're nuts, is all I can say.

So where does Beyonce/J-lo/Jessica Alba/ get their little shorts and jeans ?.

I am in the same dilemma, but even worse because I'm only 4' 11" so even petites are sometimes too long! At 33 I thought I'd have found the perfect jeans by now. I just bought some Levi's 529 "curvy fit" jeans. First I ordered size 4 petite and they were too big. When I wanted a 2, JCPenney said they didn't carry a 2. I called Levi's and they said to try Sears. Low and behold Sears.com had them on sale for $22! Woo hoo! I've had them on for 2 days now and am not totally satisfied, but they're the best fit I've had since high school - or at least since they started putting spandex in all the jeans. Anyway, the Levi's 529 curvy fit are good (a little long on me) but still a little too big in the waist and a tiny tight in the crotch at first, but after you have them on for a while they loosen up. I am planning on making some modifications on the sewing machine after I wash them and wear them a couple more times. I could still use some suggestions that come in petite sizes 2 or 4!

P.S. So, I had to return those other jeans that didn't fit. While I was at the mall with my toddler, I thought "hey, I'll try Express and Gap jeans! Maybe they WILL fit!" Wrong. The Express ones were still too big in the waist and a tiny bit low in the back. The Gap Curvy fit were definitely too low. The Gap Long and Lean fit better but still had a tremendous gap in the back. If I bought them (on sale) I'd have get them altered - taking in about 3" in the back. There have got to be more women out there dealing with this than the jeans companies realize. I took my measurements last night and I'm a 26" waist, 35 1/2" hips. Isn't that pretty close to the 10" difference that we ladies are supposed to be? I have to add that I REALLY can't stand jeans that are too low in the back, but I do like them below my belly button in the front. This is how the Levi's 529s fit. On me they kind of make a V in the front, so a belt would not help the small gap in the waist (it just makes the crotch too tight). So, I'm still sticking with my Levi's 529 Curvy 2 Petite for the moment. Levi's people, if you are reading this, could you please make a version that has another half inch in the crotch and minus an inch in the waist? Oh, and length choices down to the half inches. I think I need 27 1/2 inseam. I'd be quite happy then. Please name it 530 or 529perfect, so I'll know what to buy. And hey, you people who say "just get them altered" - you know that makes extra seams and bulk in areas we don't want bulk in. It messes up the waistband.

Ok, I have a nice round booty and I love the low cut jeans they fit perfect in the front its the back that I have a problem with. For one they come down everytime I bend over which leaves me showing my plumbers crack and personally I think that is corny but I don't want to go witha higher waist because then they look stupid in the front So how can I fix this problem? I have tried every jean you can think of. From pricey to cheap nothing seems to fix the problem and if I go up one size they look baggy in the front. HELP please.

Hey ladies,

I dunno if anyone has answered this yet, but the jeans pictured @ the beginning of the article are by eckoRed. They fit great if you are someone with a very small waist and huge bottom. If you have any kind of stomach at all though, beware because they will cut into it n give a muffintop appearance. Hope this helps. Luv 2 all my big booty sistas!

There is a new brand of jeans that I came across that where absolutely fabulous for curvy shaped women of all sizes. The brand is Little in the Middle, and this jeans line caters to all sizes of women that have a curvy shape. One of the most interesting thing that it does; is that it is sized one size smaller in the waist than in the hips, so it eliminates that awful gap in the back of your jeans that let your rear end hang out while seated while offering a great fit. I think that this would be a great addition to your listing of jeans brands for future articles. www.Littleinthemiddle.com

This is an amazing article. I'd give you a score of 1000 if I could. I rarely get an opportunity to purchase jeans while living out of the US and in the middle of nowhere - but when I visit home, I run to Levi's. They usually have a huge selection of jeans starting at around $20 a pair. Also, Express (formerly Limited Express), has amazing slacks with the same look as jeans. Thanks for getting word out!
