Chic Rain boots

This winter is turning extremely cold and wet, especially wet. Thankfully for our lovely leather boots, it looks like the “Wellies” have become fashionable. It has been a couple of winters now that models and superstars have been trying to make rain boots fashionable, to the point that some fashion magazines are trying to convince us that this season rain boots are 100% glamour. You can find them in all colours and patterns, and the materials are not limited to rubber. It is up to you to decide if rain boots can be glamorous or not.

Personally, I have only worn my Wellies for the garden. True enough I have worn the patterned and fancy ones, but their use has been limited to the garden. I had seen some photos like the one of Kate Moss pairing a mini dress with a pair of chunky £50 Huntress Wellington boots to last year’s Glastonbury’s festival, and an Olsen sister wearing hers for a day shopping in the city, but I had not seen anyone wearing them ‘for real’ outside the garden or mucky, funky music festivals: At least not until this year when I’ve finally seen them on the chic streets of Paris. Yes, finally rain boots have hit the streets; not only for the unaware gardener or Sunday walker but for women who dress fashionably but do not want to ruin their Manolo’s in the rain.

Rain boots in the city

Regardless of their fashion status, rain boots are a very useful pair of shoes to own in winter.  Probably it is the best example of functional fashion, one of the few items that we can take directly from the catwalks to the streets.  And because there are so many styles available, now we can team them up with dresses and not only with a pair of rugged jeans.

Apart from keeping your feet dry, rain boots can brighten up your day.  Now you can find them not only in green, black or white but also in bright colours –see Kenzo’s- and patterned with some funky prints.

How to wear rain boots in the city

1)      Unless you are buying the lined Gucci boots, remember to wear thick socks.  Rain boots keep your feet dry but not warm.

2)      If you want to wear your rain boots when it is not raining, choose a pair that does not scream “rain boot” like the rubber and snake skin Burberry’s or the long Givenchy’s.

3)      Pair them with slim jeans.

4)      Pair them wit short casual dresses.    Be sure to get your rain boots soon, you don't want to get caught in the rain without them.

Lgali: ordinarily I would not wear boots with no high heels, but this time I could make an exception if I had the long Givenchy rain boots... I love them!

Which one would you choose?

These rain boots are very popular in NYC! I'm glad to see something stylish for these long endless wet snowy sleety winters that we have!

I like the Kenzos on your web page! And I checked out the Gucci ad. The boot wearing here in the City however, are usually cheaper brands - but still fun and stylish.

Thanks for sharing this!

Great hub, Princessa! I think I'm going to keep my rain boots for just mucking around in the field with my dogs, though.

I think rainboots can be cute. It all depends on how you wear them. I might be in the age bracket where wearing them could come dangerously close to dowdy. I wish I had a pair the other day when a wintry rain moved in to our town. I also could have used a pair on my last trip to Paris a couple of years ago. It was in March, and it was very rainy. But, I didn't see many boots on the streets then. They're not really big here yet in my town, either, though you could wear them and be fine. I do understand wanting to save them for mucking about outdoors. I think if I wore them in town, I'd carry my dress shoes with me and change into them instead of wearing the boots all day.

Em Writes : even if it is just for mucking around, a pair of colourful rain boots can lift the winter moods :-)

tourmaline2777: do not forget the extra thick socks!

Elizabeth31: Rain boots have never been a big thing in Paris, only recently that big designers are offering them things are strating to slowly change.

Here in Alaska, I wear boots all the time, especially when I am out hunting. Boots are a must for hunting here you know. By the way, who does your hair? I love the way it is styled.

We have had such a wet winter here in Australia that rain boots made a big come back. Unfortunately they were not as stylish as the ones on you Hub.

HowtoDress: Maybe you just need to look around, I thought that rain boots only came in dark green until I had to wear them and started to look for more fashionable ones. It was great to discover that they were even featured in fashion whows!

Dona Rosa: Thank you!

Michelle: You are welcome, it took me a while to discover them, but now they are a fashion staple in my winter wardrobe.
