Fasting effects are the body's responses to the changes in the diet. Like many other changes, there are effects, be it negative or positive. Fasting, rumours claim, result in more negative effects than positive effects on the human body. Truth be told, fasting has many good effects if done correctly and safely. The latest scientific studies show how fasting effects far outweigh the so-called negative effects on the body.

The Skinny on Fasting Effects

Like many diets and weight loss plans, there are effects that come up when you undergo their regimens. Here are some of the negative effects and how to counteract them through a little effort on your part.

*    Personal hygiene is affected tremendously when you undergo fasting diets. This is because of the increased hormonal activity as the body uses its reserves to supplement the sudden deprivation of fuel sources. These effects include heavier body odor, bad breath and acne. To effectively counter act these, frequent showers, use of deodorants, increasing frequency of brushing teeth and facial washing is needed. These are but ways to relieve the effects of the increased hormonal activity of the body due to the fast.

*    Fasting may affect your body's capacity to absorb prescribed medication for other unrelated conditions. Many prescription medications require the intake of food before taking them. The main reason for this practice would be to dampen the effect of the medication on the stomach lining and the drug's effectiveness when digested. If the drug is digested on its own, much of the ingredients would be dissolved by the stomach juices and by taking them with food, the compounds in the medicine are effectively shielded from the digestive process and more of the drug can be absorbed by the body. Do check with your doctor if the medicinal value of the drug is affected by your fasting activity.

*    Fasting may cause headaches, mild nausea and constipation. These are but symptoms that the body is undergoing withdrawal from its dependency on food and moving towards the process of using up reserves for fuel purposes. Slowing down your activities while fasting and increasing your water intake are but means to counteract these withdrawal symptoms.

*    Fasting may cause you to become irritable and restless. To counteract this, do relaxation exercises to calm your nerves such as breathing exercises. This emotional short fuse is a result of your mind wanting you to eat and this is in conflict with your desire to reap the benefits of fasting. Reading a book and remaining at rest would be one of the better ways to keep yourself occupied as you undergo your fast.

The Risks of Fasting

Fasting is not for everyone, as one of fasting's effects is the sudden drop of the blood sugar level. Thus, individuals with diabetes and heart conditions are potential high-risk subjects if they do go on a fast. To be able to understand what the effects are on you, if you have an existing condition requiring maintenance medication, it is best you consult a doctor or read up on the Internet on the ways to avoid fasting effects with your specific health issues. As a whole, all the reported fasting effects can be effectively managed and controlled.
