my before photo, this is a few months before the fast when i was LIGHTER, I have photos from today that i will upload later.

Hi I have done some research and for some time now i have felt drawn to a long fast, intuitively i felt it would cure my high blood pressure.

I have fasted once years ago when i was 19 years old for 7 days, and that fast brought about severe changes in the way i thought, before the fast i was a quite selfish only child that always got his way with little consideration for anyone else.

Somehow during the fast i came to really appreciate my parents and others and started to cherish people and have consideration, in addition i gained a healthy respect for food.

My willpower and confidence, and clarity also were greatly enhanced.

This is the my current situation, from the photo above and these statistics it will be clear that i am a mess health wise.

The below figures are the average blood preassure i have when not on medication, if you check my blog you will see that my blood pressure on the day i started is well below this but its due to the fact that i had taken Linosipril 10mg a day before i began the fast - the drug takes a long time to metabolise hence the lowered stats.

Systolic 160 Diastolic 90 Pulse 70 BMI 33 Weight 119kgs

This time the fast has a few goals

  • Cure my metabolic syndrome
  • Complete Rejuvenation- I have allowed myself to gain bad eating habits -eating for convenience instead of health, i aim to purify my body, soul and mind.
  • Complete recovery from Hypertension
  • A good preparation to a different and more health concious lifestyle, including more exercise, healthier food, and meditation.
  • Longevity, i wish to live longer so i can see my son grow up and help more people, also i want to live healthy when i am older and not be incapacitated.
  • Obesity begone(dont howl about weight gain, I will change eating habits to be healthier)

So i have decided to post this here on the hub and include a link to the blog where i will take daily Blood preassure measurements:

I am not going to go into all the mechanisations of how it works, suffice it to say ive looked at the good and bad and the risks etc

for good info on the ability for fasting to Cure High BP check:

The benefits of fasting are:

  1. Longevity- studies have proven a person can expect an increase of up to 45% in their lifestyle with regular fasting. not only will you live longer, you will be fit and healthier too, as an active senior person you will be able to have a good quality of life.
  2. Fasting cures high blood preassure permanently(if you adopt a healthier lifestyle and diet afterwards- a diet mainly vegeterian and with reduced salt, which includes daily exercise.
  3. Fasting lowers cholestrol
  4. Fasting eats up and fixes all the artheriosclerosis related arterial plaque build up in the arteries.
  5. Excellent Detoxification results from the body breaking down the fat (where it stores accumulated toxins)
  6. From an ayurvedic point of view detoxification also would be greatly enhanced due to the ama(toxins both physical and emotional) being burnt up by the bodys internal fire(Agni)- agnis efficiency is GREATLY enhanced by fasting check out my Hub about Ayurveda.
  7. Internal healing due to the body redirecting its energies to the immune system.
  8. The body consumes abnormal growths and tumors during a fast.
  9. The body produces protien more efficiently, and the DNA is improved(house cleaned)
  10. Growth hormone is released and anti aging hormones are produced

The protocols i will be observing during this fast

  • No eating food
  • Drinking of 8 pints of water per day
  • Daily exercise in the form of a 30-45 min walk
  • Yoga and the 5 Tibetans as exercise
  • Daily meditation
  • I will use this time to prepare for a healthier lifestyle by incorporating the daily exercise and meditation as well as preparing to eat a healthy diet after the fast which is in line with my constitution(Pitta-Kapha)
  • I will have the support of my Ayurvedic mentor Ayurvedic Therapist/herbalist Edie O'Reilly of http://www.ayurvedaireland.net/index.html in creating a balanced lifestyle and eating a correct diet for me.
  • Ayurveda generally discourages Fasting unless you have a Kapha constitution, i have a Pitta Kapha constitution with a major Kapha imbalance, the fast is my way of eliminating the Kapha and Ama i have.

I go for walks when others are eating to avoid the smell of the food, it makes me fell a bit ill(especially if something is being fried)

The Anatomy of A Fast

A fast can be broken down into these steps(What to expect) they are based on my personal experience.

  1. Before the fast(Preparation for the fast) in this phase you need to generate serious commitment and resolve, and you should research fasting thoroughly in order to know what awaits you.
  2. Beginning of the Fast the first day or 2- you feel a little hungry but have not got to the major crisis yet. stick with it and endure the hunger pangs. this is the period of most hunger.
  3. The Healing Crisis -on or around day 3 or 4 your body has switched over to burning fat as your glycogen is exhausted. In addition your internal fire (Agni) has become much more efficient and it starts to consume the unneeded - typically you feel really awful, have headaches, aching kidneys, blood feels like MOLTEN LAVA flowing through your veins. this stage lasts about 2 -3 days- DRINK LOADS OF WATER THROUGOUT THE FAST. Only Fast if you have a KAPHA or Pitta-Kapha constitution, Vata individuals will do great harm to themselves on a long fast.
  4. Peaceful stage The healing Crisis is over and you may feel a little lethargic, but there is no longer any hunger you feel at peace, your mind becomes clear and you may have realisation upon realisation in life. the body is still detoxing but at a gentler pace, the body has slowed the metabolism down. this stage lasts from the recovery of the healing crisis until you break the fast. you may fantasise about food yet have no hunger or hunger pangs. the breath becomes sweet
  5. Breaking the fast very important , as you can harm yourself if you pig out or eat wrongly as you come out of the fast. You need to drink warm water and juice (Pomegranate is my choice as this is a natural cure for HPB) -then over the next few hours drink only juice then you can begin your new healthy diet conservatively, i would also include yoghurt to help repopulate the intestinal flora.

I would advise if you are going to do a lengthy fast that you get a specialist who knows how to do this and supervises your fast.

Hi Debra

The aftermath of my fast is that i ended it after 5 days, as my pulse was going crazy and scared me. howver this was a few months ago and ive kept most of the weight off, (im around 112kgs) and my blood pressure is cured, completely!

I am steadily trying to lose weight with more traditional means now, exercising regularly with a daily walk, watching what i eat(most of the time - i do slip up now and again.)

Nice job Brian! Definatly like your approach. I'm currently on day 5 of a 7 day fast and have seen great results. My blood pressure is way down, i've lost about 12 pounds and I feel really peaceful like you said. I've done several fasts in the past and can vouch for the tremendous results Physically, spiritually and emotionally. I've done several types of fasts all of which are natural and non evasive. It is without a doubt one of the healthiest things you can do to your body to care for it. Way to go!

Hi Brett,

Definately, fasting has been amazing in its abilty to outstrip most "cures" out there in its abilty to fix blood pressure and a host of other problems.

My blood pressure is completely fixed even to this day, i checked yesterday and my diastolic is 83(which is not bad) and thats on a normal western diet,, when i eat healthier it gets even better, and im not avoiding salt or on ANY blood pressure medication any longer, the fast completely healed that..

And yes i also noticed an awesome calmness and spiritual reassurance during the fast, a forgotten art the fast is.

Hawthorn, is a useful shrub that may help angina. It can dilate and relax coronary vessels, reducing blood pressure and improving blood supply to the heart. Hawthorn can be bought in capsule/tablet form from most good health food shops.
