BMI - A Better Measure of Body Fat

 

 

BMI is a formula that factors in height and weight to produce a number designed to estimate the presence of excess body fat. BMI measurement is a improved judgment of fatness, as opposed to body weight alone, since it relates height to weight. For example, knowing an individual weighs 200 pounds isn’t adequate data to measure whether they carry too much fat. Factoring in a person’s height helps place their body weight into perspective: A person who is 6-foot and 200 pounds may not be fat, while another person who is 5-foot-8 and 200 pounds is more in all probability to bear unnecessary body fat.

 

 

BMI and Body Fat

 

 

Higher BMI numbers are linked with raised dangers of disease and dying. Higher BMI numbers are linked with diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and some cancers. There are other ways (although less reliable) to quantify body fat. Including skin fold testing or using a commercial body fat scale, some health clubs provide these body fat testing services.

 

 

The BMI test is a more accurate manner to check out if you have needless body fat. BMI connects height to weight and is a better judgment of fatness, as opposed to using body weight solely.

 

 

 

The lowest and highest BMIs are affiliated with the highest health risks, according to research. Those health risks include cancer, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes.

 

 

BMI numbers are separated into categories intended to represent the stage of endangerment an individual confronts. Nice hub page on the need to stay slim and trim. Personally, I wish the experts had never come up with BMI - just another damn thing to feel guilty about when eyeing up that oh so desirable chocolate cake...

I eat a lot of sweets and carbs and things that I shouldn't. I also drink. But fortunately I am really into mountain biking and sometimes surfing and/or snowboarding and even frequent the gym. I think I can continue to eat a lot of crap if I keep this up... the issue is if I ever don't have time to be this active, I'll need to cut down or I'll gain weight really fast.

Nice hub though... I'm curious about my BMI now.
