Total Eclipse of the Heart
Bonnie Tyler knew how to strike a chord with the ladies and fellas when she hit us with this one. The melodic intro, the buildup, the climax... it is all too reminiscent of the love we lost. Number One Karaoke song ever.
Everybody Hurts
This REM classic just leaves a sick feeling in your stomach. Great song, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't make you wanna dance around the house in your leg warmers. The music video tops the cake. What a classic.
Unbreak My Heart
Toni Braxton, ah yes. She sings the words we all wish we had the power to sing to the one we lost. This one is just agonizing. "Unbreak my heart sweet darling, come back and say you love me again..." Ouch, I sure hope he does. I've cried to this one many many times and it never loses its power.
Love is a Battlefied
Yes, Pat Benatar, love IS a battlefield. Young love, knowing not yet what lies ahead. Dangerous. Well, what lies ahead is head is "no promises, no demands." This one leaves us hopeful, but the passion in her voice definitely makes gives it a place up here on the breakup songs list.
Piece Of My Heart
Janis Joplin rarely sang about happy things. But this one tops the cake. This cry of human emotion better rip out the heart of whoever broke hers. Man she was wronged. Didn't she make you feel like you were the only one? Hello! Didn't she give you everything that a woman possible could? Come On! This was clearly a rough breakup, and anyone will agree that they've had that moment when they roll up the windows in the car, pop in the cassette and scream, "TAKE IT, TAKE ANOTHER LITTLE PIECE OF MY HEART NOW BABY........" And the wailing at the end? Priceless.
