Classic Movies-Cary Grant
65My Favorite Cary Grant Movies
Like many of you I love Cary Grant movies. His command of comedy and drama place him among the most respected film stars of all time. A prolific actor, Cary Grant starred in films from the early 1930s until 1966.
Bringing Up Baby
Bringing Up Baby
The first Cary Grant film I ever saw was Bringing Up Baby with his charismatic co-star Katherine Hepburn. Playing the part of a museum curator who is waiting for a fossil bone to be delivered, Grant runs afoul of a wild and willful socialite played by Miss Hepburn and her newly arrived pet leopard, Baby.
The film was a box office catastrophe at the time and resulted in the firing of the director, Howard Hawks but since has become a cherished Hollywood classic.
Topper
Topper
Another delightful comedy from the 1930s is Topper. It starred Mr. Grant and Constance Bennett as the ghosts of George and Marion Kerby who have only just died. The decide to haunt Cosmo Topper, a stuffy and straight laced sort of fellow ,in order to teach to have a little fun.
This comedic masterpiece became one of the biggest smah hits of the era and made Cary Grant a great deal of money. The film and it's sequels spawned a TV show in 1953 and re-makes in 1979.
The Philadelphia Story
The Philadelphia Story
I believe Cary Grant was best in the romantic comedies. In 1940 he starred in The Philadelphia Story with Katherine Hepburn and Jimmy Stewart.
The story revolves around Hepburn, a divorced socialite on the brink of remarriage and Grant as her smooth ex. Jimmy Stewart, a reporter sent to interview the bride and groom for his tabloid gets in the mix and hilarity ensues. This one is a must-see.
My favorite Christmas film of all would have to be The Bishop's Wife starring Cary Grant with Loretta Young and David Niven as the bishop.
This heartwarming classic sees an angel, Dudley ,played by Grant who has come in answer to the Bishops prayer over the building of a new church cathedral.
Dudley shows the bishop what his true success in life is and where his treasure lies- in family and friends who love him. It's possibly the finest holiday film ever made.
House Boat
House Boat is a romantic comedy with Grant and Sophia Loren. He's widowed and she's a young and beautiful runaway who is hired to be his housekeeper. In reality she is the daughter of a famous Italian composer and has no domestic skills at all.
Grant and crew are traveling to the guest house that has been offered them when the house, which is being moved , is hit by a train. They are forced to shelter in an old beat up house boat which Grant buys and it's one funny mess after another until in the end, love wins the day.
