A Celebration of Mothers on Mothers Day

The oldest reference to celebrating Mothers dates over 30,000 BC in figurines found in Asia Minor - statues to honor the Fertility Goddess. Throughout ancient history she was known by various names, such as Kybele or Cybele in ancient Turkey, Rhea the Mother of Greek Mythology. Often the figure of the goddess mother was associated with leopards or lions for strength, the crown depicted on her brow bore fruit. One of the remaining mountain statues in Turkey is carved on a cliff face (shown below) honoring the Mountain Mother.

In Modern history, Mothers Day began in 1870 as a peace movement, since Mothers' suffered the most in times of war. The following video explores the call to Mothers to seek peace.

But it was Anna Davis who firmly established Mothers Day in 1905 as a remembrance to her Mother who had died the year before. Eventually she was unhappy with the commercialism of Mother's Day and staged protests.

The tradition has endured and Mother's Day remains as a celebration of all Mothers on the second Sunday in May in the United States. England celebrates in March and other countries have different dates as well. But the common thread is remembering Mother on Mothers' Day.

Watching From The Sidelines -  A Mother's Day Poem

Watching from the sidelines
as my Mother put on her makeup
I knew she was the most beautiful
Mother in the world.

Watching from the sidelines
as my Mother baked a cake
I knew she was the best
Cook in the world.

Watching from the sidelines
as my Mother tended my cut knee
I knew she was the best
Nurse in the world.

Watching from the sidelines
as my Mother served her guests
I knew she was the best
Hostess in the world.

Watching from the sidelines
as my Mother lived her life
I knew she was the best
Friend in the world.

Watching from the sidelines
as my Mother left this life
I knew she was the best
In my life - And I miss her.

Hi I was browsing and saw your hub - I really liked your poem. I lost my Mom last year and this year at Mother's Day it will be hard for me and my family ... but your poem made me smile and remember watching my mother get ready to go out and I DID think she was the most beautiful. You really captured the essence of a mother-daughter relationship. Thanks for sharing.
