Favorite Quotes and Excerpts
67While leaving a comment recently, I included a favorite quote. That got me thinking--"Why not write a hub devoted entirely to my favorite quotes and excerpts from books?" So I did and here it is--Enjoy!! :)
William Shakespeare
"To be or not to be: that is the question: whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortue, or to take arms against a sea of troubles and by opposing, end them?"
-Hamlet, Prince of Denmark
"To die ; to sleep; perchance to dream; ay there's the rub; for in that sleep of death, what dreams may come."
-Hamlet, Prince of Denmark
"The Devil hath power to assume a pleasing shape."
-Hamlet, Prince of Denmark
"Rich gifts wax poor when givers prove unkind."
-Hamlet, Prince of Denmark
"Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds, or bends with the remover to remove."
-sonnet 116
"What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell so sweet."
-Romeo and Juliet
F. Scott Fitzgerald
From The Great Gatsby:
"At 158th Street the cab stopped at one slice in a long white cake of apartment houses."
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
"The groups change more swiftly, swell with new arrivals, dissolve and form in the same breath; already there are wanderers, confident girls who weave here and there among the stouter and more stable, become for a sharp, joyous moment the center of a group, and then, excited with triumph, glide on through the sea-change of faces and voics and color under the constantly changing light."
Harper Lee
From To Kill A Mockingbird:
"Of all days, Sunday was the day for formal afternoon visiting: ladies wore corsets, men wore coats, children wore shoes."
"My first impulse was to get it into my mouth as quickly as possible, but I remembered where I was. I ran home and on our porch I examined my loot. The gum looked fresh. I sniffed it and smelled it all right. I licked it and waited for a while. When I did not die, I crammed it into my mouth: Wrigley's Double-Mint."
Unknown Authors
"A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step."
"When we ask advice, we are usually looking for an accomplice."
"The pen is mightier than the sword."
"Nothing remains constant except change itself."
Poets
"A person cannot be the good poet without first being the good man."

A couple more...
"It is a far, far better thing that I do, then I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that go to than I have ever known."
From A Tale of Two Cities
by: Charles Dickens
"I profess not to know how women's hearts are wooed and won. To me they have always been matters of riddle and admiration. Some seem to have but one vulnerable point, or door of access; while others have a thousand avenues and may be captured in a thousand different ways. It is a great triumph of skill to gain the former, but a still greater proof of generalship to maintain posession of the latter, for the man must battle for his fortress at every door and window. He who wins a thousand common hearts is therefore entitled to some renown; but he who keeps his undisputed sway over the heart of a coquette, is indeed a hero."
From The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
by: Washington Irving

Kevin say: He who mess with Dragon before eating become after dinner mint.

Aren't quotes great? I enjoyed reading your page today. You made excellent selections.
I recently purchased two books full of quotes, one of Twain and one of Churchill. I haven't cracked them open yet but when I do I may bust a few out on the Hubbers.
Thanks James, glad you enjoyed it. I would definitely read that hub if you write it. :) A lot of times, a great quote just presents itself while I'm reading a book, especially the classics. I love a good quote :)
Hi Janetta: I'm something of a quote freak myself - especially Shakespeare - and I totally enjoyed your excellent and learned selections! Thanks for presenting them to us!
Thanks Christoph--glad you liked it !! :D
good hub - guess you aren't that keen on Hamlet, though....?
"There are more things in heaven and earth than your philosophy hath dream't of"
LOL I am on a Star Trek binge at the moment so apart from the classic split inifinitive of "to boldly go where no man has gone before" I like "Its life Jim, but not as we know it", "Live Long and Prosper", "The needs of the many outweight the needs of the few, or the one"
LOL Lissie--I just added to your Star Trek movie forum post right before I checked my comments :) I do like "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" too true :)

Janetta - "Do not meddle in the affairs of Dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup" :)
Loved the one from Harper Lee - 'and children wore shoes'. Class!
