Fear: Conquer it or Not
55Have fear
We often hear, and it is often preached, that we must conquer our fears. They say that it is fear that causes people to fail or not to do what needs to be done. Now, I look at it the other way around. To me, we need fear so we would do something! Fear is actually a feeling that pumps up the adrenalin for people to do things that look humanly impossible to do! Panic with fear is a different thing because it lacks the presence of mind that frequently causes unwanted or unfavorable results. Often it is those who lack presence of mind who have irrational fears. They are those who panic when fear sets in
Tame Fear
A better way to address fear is to tame it. It means, instead of just fearing, try to understand the why of it, and how best it could be managed. Many successful people became what they are because they feared something! Really rich people feared to be poor. Great sportsmen became so because they feared to lose in their games. Successful entertainers feared not to have a show, a movie, a recording or concert. Many, if not most of these celebrities, feared not to have money. How did they do it? Simple, they tamed their fears into a want or a need. All people fear that they might not have something to live on, and it is because of that fear that they act. Take a look at criminals, who may have conquered fear, they do those crimes. The same way with drug addicts who seem to have no fear at all when under the influence of drugs. They have done things that they would not have done if they were not drugged!
It Happened to Me
About four years ago, I have tried to conquer fear so I was not afraid of losing money, a job or any opportunity. Not having fear is like someone who just waits for luck or manna from heaven. I became so unafraid that I actually did not bother losing anything! But that is exactly my point. It almost came that I did not even fear losing the respect, trust and confidence of my family. It was like I did not care about anything. That was when I realized that I need to have fear and tame it to be useful. When I saw the bad side of conquering all my fears, I rekindled back almost all of them. It brought me back in the right direction because I feared not having any direction at all. So, in my opinion, it's good to have fear because it will make you do something so that fear will not be a reality. Many religions say, "Have Fear in God".
