Fear of Flying?
64Why Is People Afraid Of Flying?
Common Reason:
*The Airplane is gonna crash, land-crash or just explode.
Other Not So Hysterical Reasons:
*Being hurt by turbulence
*Terrorism
*Fear of High Altitudes
Traumas:
*Have experienced bad turbulence before
*Have experienced a problem during a flight before
*Have experienced a terrorism act before
*Some important person has died in a plane accident
Real Facts
The truth is that the airplane is the safest way to travel. Ten years ago there was an expectation of one fatal plane accident (where people have died) in one million flights around the world. Today, there is one fatal plane accident every ten million flights.
Other amazing fact is that actually fear of flying is not that rare. Almost 47% of the active flyers in the world experience fear, stress and panic while they fly.
But don´t worry.
Air pilots are the most reliable, experienced and professional people of the world. This is because of the duty they have while they drive a plane. Pilots are always protecting the passengers, avoiding turbulence while they can and trying to have a smooth flight for everyone´s comfort.
The Air attendants are very important too. They are there to take care and serve the passengers in everything they can do.
They all have been trained to be prepared for everything that could happen. Like bad air turbulence, a problem during take off and landing, or during flight, which are NOT probably to happen.
An airplane is 790% safier than a car, 310% safier than a cruise ship and 180% safier than a space rocket.
Planes are made for flying, people don´t.
This is why people don´t feel very safe while they are on the sky, and it is normal! We don´t have wings, we weren´t made for flying by ourselves like birds. But planes do. They have everything to dive in the clouds, wings, tail and turbines.
Planes are safe.
Why do Air Crashes Look So Massive?
Well. Planes are big. They are being populated by big groups of people, that can go from 10 to 300 passengers. When a plane crashes (this is not common to happen), the people inside the aircraft have small chances of survival, but it all deppends on the conditions.
For example, if a plane experiences a mechanical faillure, like one turbine goes off (.03% in a flight) the pilot notices this as soon as it happens and will try to land on the nearest airport. If this happen in the middle of the ocean and there is no time to find land, the pilot will aquadive, which is possible. In this case, the whole crew and passengers while be safe.
On the other hand... imagine that there is a lot of mist in the landing area, a plane is going to down and pilots didn´t notice a huge mountain infront. The impact would be fast and painless. But here everyone is going to die. This crashes are so not common to happen that there is a registry with a number of 40 aprox. flights that ended up like this in the whole history. Which means that just 40 planes aprox. have crashed with mountains due to bad weather in the whole flying history around the world.
Now, plane crashes seem to be more common that they actually are. Why does this happens?
Easy... the media. If a plane crashes on India, how much time will the new appear on american TV screens? 2 hours? 3? And how many investigations will grow about the incident? The point here is that when a plane crashes in any part of the world, everyone knows, they make an scandal, and they start to remember other plane crashes that happened before just to have more attention of the public.
Now, think... which was the last plane accident you can remember? And before that, which was the last one? Do you know the facts that made the accident happen? Did people died?
When you say plane accident it can mean a lot of things. From a failure that pilots could control and return to ground safelly to massive crashes.
While you are reading this, cientists and engineers are improving planes with new technollogy, which is safier than minutes before, making it less chances of failling or experiencing problems.
Conclusion
I hope you enjoyed this explanation as much as I did enjoyed writing it.
I fly 10 times or more during a year to different destinations around the world. And I´ve never experienced a problem, just once experienced really bad turbulence, but everything was fine and no one got harmed. And this bad turbulence was because our plane went into a huracain.
So, next time you are feeling nervous about flying remember you are not the only one, but everything is going to be ok. Don´t think about bad things that could happen, think about what is actually happening and what you are gonna do arriving your destination.
It is 280 times easier for a person to have a car accident while driving 2 hours than a person flying on a plane for 9 hours.
Much safier!
Made 100% by me.
