And Other Phenomenon In The Phobia Room

Disclaimer: While preparing for this hub, I realized that many people truly suffer from phobias. This article is meant for entertainment purposes only and by no means is intended to belittle or demean serious phobias which, for many people have a huge impact on their daily life. Please seek professional advice if you have a true problem with any of the following phobias.

On the lighter side:

If you suffer from Hippopotomonstrosesqippedaliophobia, you can at least be glad you don't suffer from Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia.

And, if both of those bother you, perhaps you can celebrate not worrying about Iatrophobia. Of the three, I suffer from the last. But, I'm a woman of few phobias, so one out of three "ain't" bad. I'm an optimist.

The first phobia, let's call it "hippo" for short, is the fear of long words, and if you're a frequent reader, you know I seldom use words with more than 3 syllables. I could, mind you. I'm just a lazy writer. If I have to look them up to spell them, I figure you might have to look them up to read them. That's too much trouble for both of us.

Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid

I AM, Said I
I AM, Said I

The second one, let's nickname it "Hexakosio" in keeping with the lazy theme, is the fear of the number 666. If the world situation gets any worse, I'm thinking that's the next phobia for me.

The third, we'll call "latro" for the same reasons already stated, is the fear of doctors and I'm full blown infected with that one.

At least I know I'm not alone in phobias if the nightly news is any indication of measurement. I think it's safe to say that our President suffers from Ideophobia- Fear of ideas, or at least good ones; but there's good news on the horizon with this next phobia: I don't think Congress seems to have anything remotely close to Rupophobia- Fear of dirt.

Now, don't think bad of me, because I know she couldn't help it, but I saw a lady in the grocery store the other day, and I don't mean to be unkind, but afterwards I developed Genuphobia- the Fear of knees; I'm sure she couldn't help it, but then, neither could I.

My grandmother had Paraskavedekatriaphobia- Fear of Friday the 13th. but it didn't bother me until the movie came out. You've got to fear the person who thinks like that.

My husband suffers from Galeophobia - Fear of cats, or it could just be hatred of cats; our dog refuses to pee in the dark, so he must suffer from Scotophobia- Fear of darkness, but maybe that's self-preservation.

Many of us probably should have had this in our youth, Sexophobia- Fear of the opposite sex; we might have been better off. I had many kids in my home who suffered from Stasibasiphobia or Stasiphobia- Fear of standing or walking, or maybe they were just downright lazy.

And, do the holidays give you Syngenesophobia- Fear of relatives? If not, you should come to my house, I'll share the joy.

Here's one for the books, and as close to fear of success as I could get, doxophobia, the fear of praise. No chance of me coming down with that one

I'm pretty comfortable with praise, bring it on! I'll risk it.

I never thought I'd come down with this one, Pedophobia- Fear of children, but after 250 foster kids, I think I'm entitled.

I don't know about you, but if my life is any example, I think without even knowing it I've had, for a number of years: Plutophobia- Fear of wealth. I didn't know it was a disease. I thought it was high prices and taxes or something.

Now, we could just end it all by realizing that we all have Polyphobia- Fear of many things, but, wait, there's more.

I plan on keeping this one in my pocket at all times: Pocrescophobia- Fear of gaining weight.

After November, we'll all come down with Politicophobia- Fear or abnormal dislike of politicians, if we haven't already. I'm working on it.

I thought this was particularly curious, but if they're coming toward you with anything weird in their hand, I could develop this one real quick: Proctophobia- Fear of rectums; it's right up there (or down, depending on your view) with Iatrophobia.

Don't touch me, doc.

Most of us wouldn't have any danger of coming down with Pteronophobia - Fear of being tickled by feathers; unless you're the chicken who's about to lose theirs.

I don't know why, but last week I suffered from Graphophobia- Fear of writing, and this hub is the result of that, so now we all suffer from my graphophobia, may THAT never happen again.

My all time favorite, which we will all come down with after reading this hub, is Phobophobia- Fear of phobias.

Gee, I was feeling fine until I wrote all this; I think I'm coming down with something, could you please pass the valium?

cjcs, If you say them slow enough and know something about root words, they are easier to figure out!! Yep, we should be worried if we understand them too easily LOL eeek!

Marisue, not only have you enlightened us about these phobias, you have also presented a real challenge to HubPages. Have you looked at how the title to this hub has spread right over the Hub listings on your profile page? The title is completely out of the gray zone.

Love it!

It is quite obvious you are not a lazy writer. Writers (and speakers) that use the 75 cents words instead of the 25 cents words (I think that was Mark Twain's expression) are a bit pompus and fail to communicate with their audience.

I wish you had touched on the fear of success ... or the fear of one reaching their potential ... seems to me that more people suffer from that fear than any other.

Very interesting article.

A fear of rectums?  Hilarious!!! How would such a person, say, poop?

Technophobia, the fear and/or revulsion to modern technology.  The opposite of technophilia: those geeky guys with the robot girlfriends.

Don't suppose anyone would know how to contact those guys?

marisuewrites profile image

John, I will look that one up, I've suffered from it too, oh dear, another one to add to my list. - and I agree about the word use, what you said reminds me of advice from a professor in college who got me thru some rough times with his wit and wisdom. We were going through an adoption that seemed at risk at the time, and he was always so on task and prepared with his teaching, he kept me anchored.

Anyway, he said, quoting another famous person he said, that never use a fancy word when an everyday word would fit.

As a young child, I know it sounds "square" but I would read the dictionary, about a page a day. It helped me spelling back then, and my comprehension, but I always stuck with common words. I love words, but I guess you could tell that.

Thanks again for your input, and I will add the fear of success phobia -- I think it needs to be there...

Very amusing hub, but not for the many people that really suffer fro phobias, like me which many are rational!! I have Acracnaphobia, and if your a child, don't ever tell people your afraid of spiders! lie and say you love them! Just like many phobias, younger people can be very cruel, such as locking you up in small cupboards when you tell them your clausterphobic for example....I could be here all day lol, but ill leave it at that!:)

plentyoftots, thank you for coming by and reading and commenting - please come back soon! I'll take a look at your hubs as well =)

compu- smart -- you reminded me that I wanted to put up a disclaimer for those who truly suffer, so they don't think I'm making fun of them. I have now added it at the top of the hub. As a woman of "few phobias" I can relate! Deliver me from a closet or a spider or a spider in a closet.

glycodoc, See how easily we are influenced?? All of are hypochondriac wanna be's, I fear. lol Thanks so much for reading and commenting.

Stephchicks -- We are all borderline nuts, maybe? it wouldn't take much to freak me out in a torture chamber....i'm on the edge, baby!! As always I value and appreciate your comments...

Adam York, thanks for reading, I'm heading your way to check out your hubs as well!!

cvaughn -- thanks for your encouraging words, - I've been beating myself up lately wanting to write "this or that" and you spurred me on -- I'm okay, etc. I'm so fragile at times ahahhaha empty nest is a cruel event, but at the same time, it is a new door that opens and the world is looking pretty interesting. Thanks again, you just don't know how you lifted me!!

raguett: thank you for your nice words and for reading...

Marlene, me too!! and, I barely touched the subject. gives me shivers. LOL

Dottie! You know, most people I think have a few phobias...I just developed another one...i was almost done with another hub, had not saved it and hit discard changes accidentally-- all my words are now in never never land and I have to begin again. One can only hope it will be better than the first....I wanted to cry!! So, now I have a phobia of the discard changes button. sniffle.

This is a really great hub!  I have to say that  this is a real place to develope phobias.  I didn't have Phagophobia(a fear of being eaten) until I read this hub by shadesbreath: http://hubpages.com/_2dqprmd5yjhsg/hub/Water-to-Ga

Then I developed Scatophobia from one of my own hubs and after commenting on CJStones hub http://hubpages.com/_2dqprmd5yjhsg/hub/Down-In-The   I should have stuck with just being afraid of string.

I agree about the phobias....i try not to think too long about them, lest another one land on me. haha

PLM I know, i like the fear of long words the best, as I'm not much in danger of getting that one. haha Thanks to everyone for reading and helping this become a hot hub! =) fear, such a common companion yes?
