So you have decided to build a fence around your yard. You would like a bit more privacy and a fence is the perfect way to do this. The trip to the local Do-It-Yourself store has taken place and you have all of the materials for your fence. You go into the back yard and realize you do not have a fence post hole digger.

The type of post hole digger that you will need depends on the type of fence that you are going to be building. There are many types of materials that you can build a fence out of. Each of these types will require a post hole for the main posts that will brace the fence.

Smaller fences can have a simple small hole for each post. The smaller garden fences will not exactly require a hole to be dug, but will have posts on each of the sections that will need to be securely placed in the ground. Typically all that is needed for these small fences is a soft mallet to help drive the fencing into the ground.

If you are planning on building a chain link fence, you can do this with a manual post hole digger. This tool will work well to get the small hole dug that is needed for a chain link fence post. Once you have the hole dug, you can put in the post, level it off and fill the hole with concrete to make the post hold up under a good deal of stress.

Those who are building a larger fence such as a wooden fence will need to have much bigger holes dug. This will not be an easy task to take on with a manual post hole digger. The holes have to be very big to handle the size of the post and the concrete that will be used to set it in. A typical post for a wooden fence is a 4 inch by 4 inch post or bigger. This means a post hole will need to be at least triple that and very deep.

A great tool to dig a post hole for wooden fence would be an earth drill or power auger. There is also a tool called a post hole digger that will help to bring the earth out of the ground much quicker than you could do manually.

Any of these three tools will be a huge aid in digging your post holes. Once you have your post holes dug, the rest of the fence building will be a breeze. Set your posts and let them sit so the concrete can completely cure before building the rest of the fence.

No matter what type of fence post hole you need, there will be a tool that will aid in digging it. There is no need to stress your body overly when you can rent a tool that will help get the job done quicker and easier.
