Fiction Writing (how to get started) Part 1
66A New Beginning
So you want to be a fiction writer, or do you have an idea for a story? Maybe you do not have any idea where to begin or maybe you do, but do not know if the material you have is enough for a full blown story. Whatever the situation is, I am here to help. Let me know where you are and I can help evaluate your circumstances.
There are numerous ways to generate ideas for a novel.
1)Keep a dream journal handy~people have vivid dreams constantly, unless you have something to jot them down next to you there is a strong chance you could forget it completely. Personally, I love these things. It is amazing how many directions your story will go with a couple of different dream perspectives.
2)Pay attention to your surroundings~you should try to keep a notebook handy for things that capture your attention. Maybe you are in a grocery line and happen to catch part of someone's conversation, which trips your idea switch.
3)Transfer your ideas onto either your computer or index cards. Make sure you label them, because you do not want to forget where you intended the material to go.
4)READ! READ! READ! It is surprising how many ideas will come to you after reading something somewhere. You could have ideas slap you upside your head after reading a billboard somewhere. You want to be ready at all times.
5)Talk with other writers. Many writers are more than happy to give you a little helpful critique or shove. You can find writers anywhere...local bookstores, online, on college campuses, heck you may even stumble into a fellow writer at a coffee shop.
Personally, generating your idea is the best place to start. Remember, no matter what you write, you are always going to have to rewrite something some time. So I, personally, would not worry about the beginning of the novel until the end. When you reach the end, you have a clear idea where your novel was headed. Of course, I have heard other writers say they work best working backwards.
Get to know the genre you are writing. You should know your genre before you even begin your novel, or at least have a solid idea about it.
Another area to begin would be with the development of your characters. A great way to start anything could come from the background development of your characters.
