Starting with your main characters

We are sitting down at the drawing board, this blank ominous space daring you to continue on with your endeavor. Let us, for the sake of spirit, start like we do not have any characters in mind. Since this is the case, we are going to make it really simple. We are going to call them A and B. Easy, no pressure. Right?

Next, we will drop character A down and begin listing some of the traits to this character; like so:

Character A~he's short, for the time, 5'7", his temper makes up for his shortcomings.

Non-smoker, light drinker(due to a bad reaction on one specific occasion).

Wavy, blond hair, with crystal blue eyes(people are uncomfortable when he stares at them, it's like he is looking right through them). In his early 30's, still well built, even though he's been slacking at the gym. Complains about lack of time.

Our main character works in a factory, long hours, decent pay and benefits. Recently offered a new position with a big salary increase, he is afraid to tell his wife, since their relationship has been so strained to begin with.

You see, now you have an idea of what is plaguing our hero. Okay, it is a decent start. Now, we can begin taking a look at our heroine, B.

Character B~she's tall, leggy, and married(unhappily, since she gets more attention from the men she is not with.) She is a real beauty, and, like any beauty, knows it.

Long raven waves flow over her shoulders, which she loves to pull up and tight. It often makes her look snobbish, especially when she lowers her sunglasses, revealing deep emerald eyes. She has full, pouty lips, and the mouth of a sailor.

She works for a contractor, running the office. A job she relishes, there's nothing like capturing the attention of all these finely sculpted men. She is sure to point that out to A constantly.

Recently, things have been stressed. Her boss talked her into filing for divorce, but she's afraid to ask A to sign the papers and hasn't notified him yet. However, she recently overheard her boss talking about the disposal of a body beneath the development they have been working on. She does not think her boss knows what she overheard, however, he has dropped several hints as to the possibility.

There is only one man she can turn to.

Now, we have something interesting happening. We have a plot unfolding, just by developing a couple of our main characters. Next, we can work on furthering the story by enhancing the plot with background settings and storyline. Which, I will bring you later on.

Its important to know your characters inside and out. You should know their strengths and weaknesses. I liked your examples.
